Which previous PMs would have been mad enough . . . 22:08 - Sep 30 with 4483 viewsGloryHunter

. . . to press the nuclear red button?

Thatcher. And Blair. Both clearly bonkers.

It's not about being mad enough it is about being prepared to as the last resort, thus maintaining a deterrent. Whereas the loony that is Corbyn has effectively told potential enemies, 'do what you like as we won't react'.

Poll: Where will Clive put QPR in his new season preview

It is not a question of whether it would be used but that an enemy should think there was a possibility

DaveB is pretty much the voice of reason round here, I expect he'd only push the button if he'd got a clear sight on Stamford Bridge and we were all on holiday.

Seriously, there was a really good Radio 4 programme on the nuclear button a few months back and Thatcher was surprisingly equivocal - gave the distinct impression that she was about the only one so far who wouldn't have pressed the button even if she knew Britain was already doomed.

Honestly don't think Blair would off, not good for PR

Thatcher would have definitely, Major no, Dave no, Osborne definitely would

So the deterrent effect depends upon how edgy the leader is perceived to be. Hence why we are all scared of Putin.

Strange how this story has snowballed. I listened to the interview on radio 4 and no matter how much he was goaded he didn't actually say that he would not press the button.
What's it all about ? Dunno, except that the press and media have the answer they're going to run with before they ask the question.

Strong and stable my arse.

Also gassed a few Arabs in the Middle East. That sort of policy would give some on here the horn.

Not exactly comparable. When Churchill was PM we only had fission weapons (the A-bomb), not fusion (aka the H-bomb), about a thousand times more powerful. Even the alcoholic Churchill would probably have thought twice about contributing to nuclear armaggedon.

Mass destruction is mass destruction,I don't believe he would have hesitated one iota to use a fission-fusion-fission device if faced with similar. He had scant regard for human life even berating someone for "you only lost...." (X amount of soldiers)Anthrax had the potential as great in it's own way as nuclear fire.

If anyone seriously believes that any British PM would 'press the button' without permission from Washington they need to think again.

Yes Prime Minister did a brilliant piece about the likelihood of any PM using nuclear weapons.

Rogue commanders could quite easily utilise the dual key system. The required "permission" from Washington doesn't exist despite the propaganda.

The real problem is if some nutty group such as is get hold of a nuke or dirty bomb and use it in usa or Europe London being a prime western target and its found that the materials for the weapon came from one of iran ,north korea ,Pakistan

what then hard to nuke a terror cell but do you let their backers who gave them the weapon get away with it?

Whether permissions is 'required' or not you can be damn sure no PM would do it without getting the go-ahead first.

20 years into the Indo Pak nuclear game. It would have happened by now. The only certainty is it would have been sold at the London Arms Fayre. Saudis have a seat on the UN's Human Rights panel....

Meanwhile the Pope's a knut as usual and the Brit PM fcks dead pigs.

Whilst Russia bombs ISIS by invite from Assad and the US have no UN resolution. Or invite, or ask for help.

See the correlation between bombing Serbia 20 years ago, Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya now Syria, with the spikes in European refugee flows. When NATO bombed Serbia, Cameron was fcking dead pigs in the mouth at Oxford. The pig and button options would simultaneously cause his mental melt down. Vote Tory, get pig fcker. Put a man who can be compromised by a pig in charge of Trident. Great move.

Very clever. 10 days later Dave's lawyers silence is deafening. No doubt w4nking in the gravy train.

Here's a real future to consider, whilst Russia and US bomb in Syria with different agendas likely to lead to WW3, Putin, Osborne and Trump. Good night.

Prime Minister Corbyn would definitely push the red button. It's the only way to turn the TV off.

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

Thatcher would never have said that she wouldn't but I seriously doubt that she would have done so in any circumstances. She seems to be the one that the loonies pick upon to say she'd have been firing all over the shop, but her foreign policy was pretty tight from what I remember, if you exclude the Falklands fiasco - which actually stemmed from defence cuts and Argentina thinking that we weren't arsed any more. That should be food for thought for Corbyn. If people think that you'll hold your corner then that's probably the best way of achieving peace if everybody does the same and has no territorial ambitions (such as Ukraine).

It's unlikely that any PM would have pressed the button as the world's pretty much knackered if it ever kicks off so why add to it? So I don't understand Corbyn indulging himself on this. He's not very bright is he?

The PM most likely to have pressed the button? Probably Brown on a bad day in dire circumstances but even then very unlikely.

Except .............he didn't say it. I know 'cos I listened to the interview.
He may have said when he was younger before he was leader of the party but hey, that was then. Cameron doesn't STILL put his tackle in a dead pig's mouth.

The only government that would be mad enough to use nuclear weapons would be one dominated by people who thought it didn't matter if they died because they were guaranteed a place in heaven with 72(?) virgins. But then nobody could be that bonkers surely?
Oh,hang on a minute.......
