Seriously, there was a really good Radio 4 programme on the nuclear button a few months back and Thatcher was surprisingly equivocal - gave the distinct impression that she was about the only one so far who wouldn't have pressed the button even if she knew Britain was already doomed. | | | |

Strange how this story has snowballed. I listened to the interview on radio 4 and no matter how much he was goaded he didn't actually say that he would not press the button.

Not exactly comparable. When Churchill was PM we only had fission weapons (the A-bomb), not fusion (aka the H-bomb), about a thousand times more powerful. Even the alcoholic Churchill would probably have thought twice about contributing to nuclear armaggedon. | | | |

Thatcher would never have said that she wouldn't but I seriously doubt that she would have done so in any circumstances. She seems to be the one that the loonies pick upon to say she'd have been firing all over the shop, but her foreign policy was pretty tight from what I remember, if you exclude the Falklands fiasco - which actually stemmed from defence cuts and Argentina thinking that we weren't arsed any more. That should be food for thought for Corbyn. If people think that you'll hold your corner then that's probably the best way of achieving peace if everybody does the same and has no territorial ambitions (such as Ukraine).
It's unlikely that any PM would have pressed the button as the world's pretty much knackered if it ever kicks off so why add to it? So I don't understand Corbyn indulging himself on this. He's not very bright is he?

The only government that would be mad enough to use nuclear weapons would be one dominated by people who thought it didn't matter if they died because they were guaranteed a place in heaven with 72(?) virgins. But then nobody could be that bonkers surely?
