converting / digitising old QPR videos 23:45 - Nov 26 with 5564 viewsPeterHucker

I've got a load of old QPR videos, season highlights and stuff going back to the late 80s. But I've got no VHS player to play them on.
Is there anyone out there who has the facility to convert these files to digital and burn them on to a DVD for me?

If you have money...

One of the reviews says can be used for copying VHS tapes to DVD.

that looks like it would do it but I wasn't planning on spending a load of money to get it done.
I was more thinkng that there might be some QPR fan on here who had access to the sort of equipment that could do it??
Anyone out there?

To be honest mate, it takes hours to covert because you have to sit there while the VHS plays in real time. I have the equipment but would not be interested in sitting there spending hours converting someone else's VHS tapes at any price.

I think you'll find it difficult to find anyone willing to do this....but you never know.

If those tapes haven't been worn out yet, then they probably are not worth it.

I have access to a vhs/dvd player and it is meant to be able to perform this copying but the one time I did try this with a football video, it didn't work as due to copyright protection. I'm not sure how to get round this to be honest or how it knows a real video from a blank tape. I tried covering the tab on the video etc but this didn't make any difference. The player knew it was an illegal action.

I've just googled my issue.

Seems I'm f@cked with what I have in a DVD VHS combo machine. You need a separate VHS player and DVD recorder so you can intwine a stabliser to knock out thecopyright signal which is embedded in the tape.

Bladdy hell, seems 80's technology wasn't quite so crude.

£20 per dvd ! I've got the same problem, with about 12 tapes of the early to mid 80's of all the goals every week, 2 Milk cup semis (taped Starsky & Hutch over the final ), FA cup Final and replay with all the chat. Think I'll live without them at that price !

It's being so happy that keeps me going.

The only disgusting filth on my videos is where Chelscum happen to be the opponents.

BTW, it is possible to buy a device which gets rid of the anti copying code embedded in the VHS. I do not believe that converting your own VHSs to DVDs is immoral and probably isn't illegal either if you only do it once for each VHS. You have bought the right to watch the content so changing the format is not actually piracy in my view.

Failing that - cheap and not high quality but effective - play the VHs on a good quality TV, and video the TV using digital camera on a tripod.

Agree with many posters above.I use elegato Video capture.I hook it up to my Video is till have, or my old tv Combo.

Im pretty sure you can pick up an old VHS / TV combo pretty cheap from somewhere..and then...it's just a time thing.Try your local charity stores, grand parents or just older people in general. My mum had an old Matsui in her bedroom...Once i told him to naff off.....i took it and still have it and use soley for this purpose of getting my old QPR videos, family get togethers and the old naughty movie

Cheaper than a combo, you'd have to burn them off a pc though.

There doesn't seem to be a price listed but Snappy Snaps do them. Being a high street chain, I hope they're cheaper than the vhstodvd link.

My company

www.edm-solutions.co.uk

Deals with mainly high volume conversion of paper to a digital format , but we do also handle film (8mm), vhs conversion, 35mm slides , pretty much all types.

£20 is not bad to convert a VHS to DVD. We do use the PC method aswell if the customer wants editing , captions, music etc, but price increases significantly

You can buy a VHS data capture/editing system from E-bay for less than £15 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-VHS-To-DVD-Converter

and a DVD writer for £15.

Hope this helps.

'PeterHucker' doesn't have a VHS player so unfortunatley those cable adaptor thingys I don't think will be of help.

Staying with E-bay, maybe an option is to buy a VHS>DVD machine off e-bay, convert all the VHS's then sell it on E-bay again!

If one is bought for £80 then sold for £70 it's actually only cost a tenner (plus postage and fees)

I have just dealt with www.ontodvd.com who have advised me that copyright is not a problem as you are allowed to make a single copy as a backup.
I am getting them to do transfer some of my daughters old favourite VHS's onto DVD and they seem quite reasonable. Postage is high but they then charge per hour of VHS that needs converting.

@PeterHucker, I have a Toshiba V-752UK

http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews8312.html
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-V752UK-Video-Recorder/dp/B000066NZE

I haven't used it for at least 5 years, but just plugged it in, and it still seems to be working.

You are welcome to that if you need to go down the route suggested by Toast_R and spenser (separate VHS player and DVD recorder).

i remember taking my mum to a local company to get hers put on dvd a few years ago, i've checked and they're still open, they did a great job and if I remember correctly, they post nationally so it might be worth you looking into. i've attached a link below if that helps :)

Given this topic seems to have been posted in 2012, there is a reasonable chance he doesn't need to use your company by now!
