The Toronto Maple Leafs have done it again, blowing a 3-1 playoff lead to lose to the Canadiens. Still unable to win the Stanley Cup in the 54 years since the number of opponents went up from 5. After a spell when teams like the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Eagles, Clermont-Auvergne, Cronulla Sharks and Western Bulldogs finally won a title after a ridiculous wait, who else is really overdue a title? For the sake of argument, I’m leaving out football as it generally has a pyramid with hundreds of clubs in each competition. Apart from the Leafs, I’m thinking... Warrington RL, one of only six or seven clubs with a realistic chance, no title since 1955. Hanshin Tigers, the best supported of only 12 Japanese baseball clubs, only one title ever - 1985. Somerset CCC, in the county championship since 1891, never won it! | |
