I’ve been working my way through ‘Inverting The Pyramid -The history of football tactics’ and I came across a bit of QPR history. A little bit tenuous, but note worthy…
Billy Barnes was the second manager of Athletic Bilbao (1914-1916 & 1920-1921) and led the team to two Copa Del Ray’s before WW1 and 1 Copa Del Ray after.
He made 234 appearances for the R’s.
Fred Pentland (also a former R) managed Athletic Bilbao (1922-1925) and also won the Copa Del Ray.
Both were key players in our 1907-08 Southern League winning team that then competed in the very first Charity Shield with Manchester United.
Fred Pentland played in the 1908 England trial match at Manchester City's ground alongside QPR team mate Evelyn Lintott. The latter catching the selectors eye and gaining QPR's first England cap. Fred later played for England but only after he had moved on to Middlesbrough.
Pentland is still very much revered in Bilbao as he not only won the Copa Del Rey as manager, but also La Liga and Copa Del Rey doubles in the early 1930's. It's well worth a trip to the San Mames museum to see his legacy.
