It was a shock when Critchley left to replace our new manager as Villa's Assistant.
I think he had built a good reputation, could see a struggle ahead and didn't want to risk a relegation on his cv. Possibly can see a short pathway to Villa's no1, when Gerrard leaves.
That and the money, as Villa may pay more for a no2 than Blackpool can for a no1 and Gerrard will have been very keen to get an experienced replacement for Beale.
