Noticeable how much stronger we seem to be in the centre of the pitch in the last 2 games. Both Watford and Hull have had to go wide to get round us. Watford have more talent on the wings so were, unsurprisingly, better at it than Hull but it was really noticeable last night how frustrated Hull got passing in front of us and then sending diagonal balls across the pitch. With Paal and Laird now getting up to speed we looked much tougher to get past. I had a look on the heatmaps - https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1648209/Live/England-Championship-2022-2023-Qu - and it's clear the strength in the middle and the higher press (which we didn't use against Watford so well) made a big difference last night. This feels like it might be the way Beale is expecting us to play; force teams to play round us, press high, and hit them on the break with Dykes, Willock, and Chair. | |
