Defending corners 14:42 - Feb 26 with 1551 views | cpgerber | Apologies if this came up in an earlier thread. Looking at the Derby goal, why did we not have a man defending inside every post? My 12-year old kid is goalkeeper and its one of the things he gets drilled into his brain: demand a player covering the inside of the posts. Or is that now considered old school? Looks like a pretty simple basic thing to do and could have avoided that goal.
Defending corners on 14:52 - Feb 26 with 1513 views | Northernr | Our defending at corners has been pretty shambolic all season and that was terrible last night. We seem to do a couple of things that are just absolutely counter intuitive. Firstly it's a mixture of zonal and man, but it's our best, strongest headers of the ball doing the zonal - mostly along the edge of the six yard box - and the weaker players in the air doing the man marking. So last night you've got Pugh marking Waghorn, who's their top scorer. Few times this year it's been Amos marking a big centre back, think that was how Forest got their first from memory. Secondly, we constantly allow a big overload at the back post. That was also the Forest first goal but everytime a back post cross goes in we seem happy to let a queue form with only one person there to monitor it - one of those late chances last night was Kelly palming a ball to the back post where there was only Clarke defending. Thirdly, like you say, nobody on either post. Man on the back stick clears that one last night.

First obvious mistake was that Pugh got under the cross. But, for me, hall should have been attacking the ball. Then pugh’s job is just to make life difficult for waghorn while hall clears it out. Instead hall got drawn beyond the near post and ended up in a zone doing nothing at all. Cracking finish by hall earlier though Considering the small size of our keeper I think he could do with help on at least one post.

| Wish I could be like David Watts |

Where do you get that our keeper is small? He’s virtually the same size as smithies.

He does look small. Stats say six foot 2 I think but he looks small in that goal. Especially in the last five minutes when they were about to take a free kick!

He's exactly 6 foot tall. The same height as Lee Camp.

Yes, at the time I thought the Derby forward had let us off the hook as he had plenty of time to control the ball and send it back into the mix but I didn't take into account our weakness from corners. Clearly the opposition identified this beforehand and were willing to settle for set pieces whenever the opportunity arose. But for a smart save from Kelly, Waghorn would have had a second goal from a corner late in the game. [Post edited 26 Feb 2020 16:57]

Yeah as I said on another thread, I'm not a fan of zonal marking as it requires a great deal of collective intelligence and cohesion for it to work. Much like playing out from the back, it appears to be the done thing nowadays irrespective of whether a club possesses the talent to execute it.

Don’t you think he looks small? I think it’s a small keeper that’s visibly shorter than his centre backs.
