A disappointing outbreak of common sense and pragmatism from their selectors, who can normally be relied on to do the right thing. They are still lacking in depth in the bowling and proven ability against sideways movement in the batting, but England will have to eliminate their flaky days to be sure of winning. It should be close in the return series.

Agreed re: common sense but Cricket Australia could've spared a thought for the tens of thousands of poms exercising their vocal chords for rousing renditions of "he bowls to the left, he bowls to the right..."

It seems that he was left out after being totally destroyed by the Barmy Army on the last day of the Sydney test in 2011. Always worth a view on YouTube for his last innings first ball duck. One of the greatest moments in cricket. Shame Johnners wasn't around to commentate on it, would have capped it off.

That indeed was an amazing moment. It was like being in the old loft when that wicket went. And then the song as he trudged back to the pavilion was so loud.

Johnson has had some damaging spells against us in past after crowd has wound him up - very little middle ground with him and either 5for or 0-150.
Remember him looking to nut Styris batting helmet and all....

I think the Aussie selectors are looking ahead. There is a young fella by the name of James Faulkner who has been picked instead. He plays for Tasmania and in the IPL. Very handy left arm seamer, and at 24 he has possibly ten years ahead of him.

I was at the first three days of that Test. The song was relentless. Biggest highlight for me though was when I was walking through the Rocks area one evening to come across a dozen or so Barmy Army singing it to Johnson and his wife as they were coming out of a restaurant. She went absolutely ballistic and was almost spoiling for a fight. Mitch just looked sheepish.
