Gaffer on today's defeat
at 22:36 1 Jan 2026

I like Kieran Morgan but apart from his last minute goal he’s been a big disappointment this season. Yes I know he’s only 19 but he’s been pretty awful in the last couple of appearances and was just getting minutes again after his disastrous game at Coventry. I’d be surprised, having seen the comments from the manager at 3:00, if Morgan got on the pitch again other than as a last resort. You could sense his absolute disappointment with Morgan and that he almost felt let down by him. JS seemed very deflated. Unusual for JS to name players in his post match interviews.

I actually think Morgan could do with a loan out for the rest of the season to get regular games rather than a few minutes here and there. He’s not going to progress at all if we keep him here.

Is anyone else feeling a bit depressed this evening?

Not depressed. Just resigned and a bit numb. I can’t imagine how the people who spend far more time, money and effort on QPR than me must feel.

So why would you hope that, by your own admission, our best midfielder leaves the club?

Judging by comments on this site and on SM Madsen seems favourite, at this stage, for Player of the season.

Don’t get me started on the House of Lords which aggravates me far more than it really should. Such a phenomenally abused institution being filled with so many undeserving, under qualified friends, family and political nonentities. It’s so utterly corrupted that people call for it to be abolished which is the complete opposite of what should happen. Who’d want the legislation of some cretinous Govt to be un scrutinised?

The place should be filled with, as far as possible, non politically aligned experts from every profession imaginable. If ever an institution needed truly radical reform it’s the HoL.

Knighthoods/Damehoods etc are the same; awards for the undeserving financial donors and two bit entertainers. These awards should be decided by a panel of randomly selected members of the public.

Aged 20 Jimmy Dunne was on loan at Barrow in the National League. I think Centre backs are more akin to goalkeepers; they take a bit longer to ripen.

Gaffer on Portsmouth, Christmas and beyond
at 21:58 24 Dec 2025

I think the fact he doesn’t come out with the tired football cliche’s is one thing that I like about him. Interviews from other managers (no names) are boring, have an almost defensive attitude and you’re never able to penetrate past that to see any kind of personality. That is definitely not the case with Stephan; a man that seems very comfortable in his own skin. That kind of genuine, open personality is far more relatable and the players appear to get on well with him (from just a few snippets admittedly).

I don’t think I’ve ever seen him speak and not be impressed with his communication skills, his football acumen and his personality. I think we’re very lucky to have him. Definitely the best communicator since maybe Warburton?

I find this idea that clubs are loyal to players or that players are loyal to clubs for any other reason than money and self interest rather touching in its naivety.

I get this point of view completely. I’d be sorry to see Smyth go. However, even though Poku and Vale have barely played this season I’d be surprised if, between Poku, Dembele and Vale, we couldn’t cover the right side of midfield for the remainder of the season.

Also you don’t need half a season to spot a more technically gifted, better player.

He’s only ahead of Poku and Vale at the moment because they’ve been injured. When fit, which they both are more or less now, they’re both much better footballers. I like Smyth for all the reasons you’ve listed but he’s technically rather limited and there’s little to no resale value at the end of any new contract we may offer him. With Dembele playing there as well, despite his limitations (Leicester aside), does it really make sense to have a fourth player in the same position?

I’m surprised that the club are negotiating a new contract with him tbh and, as I’ve said, I like Smyth.

Impotant goals?! That reminds me of the old joke about the man who returns home from a Dr’s appointment wearing a new Top hat. His wife asks him why he’s wearing a top hat to which he replies…..

I’d be surprised if the club weren’t offering anything other than a very low contract. Poku, Dembele (especially after the Leicester game) and a fit Vale are better options IMHO.

I know, I know but name me a more winnable fixture this season? If we do win the next 4 games then I’d expect the ‘Could we go up this season’ thread to go stratospherical.
