There is a little bit of a story behind the performance. Prince had found out that he had been left out of the top 100 guitarists of all time list. As he was also being recognized that year it was arranged for him to join the George Harrison tribute performance. He was supposed to rehearse with them before the night but sent a message saying let the guitarist have the first solo and he would come in at the end solo. No rehearsal. He obviously nailed the solo on the night as a way of saying FU to the Rolling Stone list. Next year I think he was named 14th best guitarist.
