The few times I've seen him, in the friendly against Livingston, a couple of cameo appearances for first team and a couple of B team/U23 games, he has impressed. Looks composed, good on the ball and as we saw against Reading, shows a bit of pace. Not sure what his best position is as he's played both as a defensive midfielder and as a 10. I thought he would be a good option with Field in a 4-2-3-1, yet Ainsworth seems content to keep the unimpressive Dozzell there.
We've lost Tim, Johansen and Amos from last season and have not replaced them. Yesterday, we were outplayed by Oxford's midfield, led by Brannagan. Surely Dixon-Bonner is worth starting. Need a new presence in midfield to give Field some support. Just as important as sorting central defence in my view.

It won't be the answer to all the (very worrying) problems but, as others have suggested, might get the best out of the current squad. On their day (though this appears remote now) we have two of the best full-backs, centre backs and number 10s in the Championship and we need a system that brings out these strengths. Far too early to judge Critchley but the formation last night didn't work and didn't make best use of our players: Tim Iroegbunam playing in a defensive midfield role unable to make the kind of runs so effective against Preston; Chair, isolated and out wide on the left (their first goal came from a free run of 60 yards down our left); Tyler Roberts over-played and ineffective in a 10, with Taylor Richards under-played on the bench. Willock and Chair yet to play together under new manager though illness and injury a factor there. Doesn't solve the striker problem and levels of confidence and commitment, but getting the best players in best positions would be a start. |

Well-regarded, promising young manager. Turned down two championship jobs to stay at QPR.
Knows squad and can continue to develop young players following excellent job by Warburton.
Aware of club's position and realistic about prospects.
Wouldn't cost a lot.

Thread | Fake Crowd Noise For New Season - What do we think?

Personally can't stand it. Accept that missing fans is a massive issue but now think that the fake noise does not add to atmosphere but instead is just a big con. Do we really need it? We know it is possible to have an exciting Test Match without the crowd noise. Sometimes in the noise-free games you pick up the odd comment from coaches that you would otherwise miss. The worst cases are when noise for goal celebrations are heard several seconds after the ball has gone in, and the incessant hissing before a penalty is taken which gives a completely misleading impression of what is going on. Our QPR noise isn't the worst but even that could be reduced to the usual goal jingle.
Of course we could still press the red button or whatever (though that option isn't always there) but why do we need it anyway? |

would be to give Warburton a two year extension. Let him finish the job. Whatever else the season is remembered for (I assume we won't go up or down), eg calamitous defending, disappointing cup exit etc., it will be the rise of our three young players Eze, Chair and BOS that will stand out. Credit to MW and the other coaches for that. |

5 games unbeaten, if we include the cup games, W2 and drawn 3, F4 A2. Two of the best attacks in the Premiership couldn't break us down. We have one of best keepers in the Premiership in great form and at last we have a settled defence. Plus, we have started to win away - both wins away from home after accepting inevitable defeat on the road for a year under Hughes
Part Two is turning draws into victories and scoring more goals. Remy has started that and I think there will be a possible front 3 of him Zamora and Tarabt. Zamora gets somed stick here but he is excellent at holding ball and bringing people into play which is what we need. |

Always easier in hindsight but seem to remember Warnock identifying Odemwingie, Jelavic, Naughton as possible Jan signings last year before he was sacked in favour of Hughes' greater expertise in transfer market. He may not have got those players but they seem the type that would have helped us. Even his much derided Puncheon turns out to be one of Soton's best players this year. |

This is wildly optimistic but I wonder if the fans 'You're only here for the money' demonstration after the Soton game will turn out to be a defining moment. It has certainly had an effect on Fernandes et al and even Hughes has been moved into thinking he needs committed players. The fans have had their say and hopefully the club will get the message in who they appoint next. It shows that demonstrations and fans voices can count at certain times. However, more than likely the damage has already been done.
If this had all happened a month ago after the Arsenal match we might even have got Holloway back before he went to Palace. Instead it looks as if we may have come full circle since the 4 year plan when Briatore was picking the team, through to Hughes' 'interviewing the club hierachy' and now after what has happened almost being told (in very different circumstances) who he should pick'. |

Has Onouha been given a fair crack in central defence, his main position? Maybe him and Ryan Nelson could be best partnership, with Dyer and Fabio full backs. Something needs to change |

While I think we need stability and certainly don't need another change of manager, these are worrying times. I agree with what Clive says about Hughes' lack of tactical nous, desspite the impression he likes to give of professionalism, and meticulous preparation etc. We must be the only team in the premiership which now persists with 4-4-2. When we were last in the premiership under Gerry Francis, 4-4-2 was the favourite formation and we had ideal players for it. Sinclair and Impey were on the flanks and we had arguably the two best full-backs in the division in Bardsley and Wilson. Compare that with Hughes' line up on Wednesday. Two centre-backs at full-back and two unconvincing wide players, (particularly when there were better options for that role). Park did play wide right for Man U but in a different formation. (And in any case Hughes has been playing him on the left). We got promoted with 4-2-3-1 where everyone knew their role and with the players we have we would be well-suited to 4-3-3 or versions of 4-5-1. To be fair to Warnock, he knew more about formations and how to mould a team and integrate players around it. True, we have injuiries but Hughes then has to respond tactically. If we have more centre backs than full-backs available, he could also have tried three at the back with wing backs. Plus, don't we have young full-backs? Why is it other teams are able to bring in young players they've developed when needed, but we never do? Another worry for me is that we only have 2 recognised fit strikers and Zamora, excellent player though he is, is injury prone. |
