Thanks Clive. A fine week to be writing on QPR. What would have been the betting odds that you would award 8 each to the referee and Junior? About 8 million to one, I expect. I'd dearly like to believe that his improvement is due to changed circumstances all round (JFH & coaches/new Dad/playing well internationally) than opportunistic baiting for a new contract. Who knows? As others have said, I'd take him on reduced wages but if he keeps playing like this he will be noticed by PL teams. |

It's mystifying how R performances can vary so much, but it's nice to read for a change that the manager apparently thought correctly about his selection, and also seems to be man-managing well. Your excellent and scary interview with Uncle Tony confirmed that the pre-January selections had a shop-window flavour. Perhaps now JFH can pick who he likes. Maybe even some of the new crop?
062259, I'd say that "only Hoilett of the big-earning old guard" IS STILL PLAYING regularly. Albeit inconsistently as ever. He's still only 25 but seems to have been around forever. |

His change of form seems to coincide with his decision to (at last) play internationally for Canada. He has played well in 2 qualifying matches so far and received a lot of attention back home which he clearly enjoyed. Subsequent to that he has played with more belief. |

We are certainly short of options as a result of his incompetence, but the fact that we stayed on the front foot and neutralized them for long periods is encouraging. In the end Sanchez was the difference. With Dunne and Fer healthy we might have drawn and if Charlie and Matt had been a little more accurate we might have won. Although Henry should have been sent off for his pull-back of Ozil. If someone had done that to Charlie we'd be screaming blue murder. |

Absolutely nailed it Clive. Speaking of which, this piece should be nailed to the QPR Boardroom door like Martin Luther's 95 theses. Interestingly, ML strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment for sin could be purchased with money. Football management sin being "fail to plan, plan to fail" then he wasn't half wrong, was he.
Flashback to HR in November 2012: “I’m not here for a short-term fix, keep the club up…I want to build something here.†I don't think a "seedy hotel overlooking a dodgy petrol station" (LOL) is what he or anyone else had in mind but that's what can happen without a proper strategy. This all seems to be in Sir Les's hands now.

You've been skeptical about Tim Sherwood in past columns. If he is the front-runner, what evidence is there to suggest that he is the best manager to work with Les and others toward the Southampton/Swansea model? |

I hope that Zarate gets off on the right foot. He'll soon learn that service is lean and that he has to make the most of any chance at all and that he'll have to track back when our passes go astray, which is most of the time. If we get anything from this game it will likely be a combination of hard core last ditch hand to hand defending, with Rob Green standing on his head, and a fortunate set piece or two. |

IMO the players have to lift the crowd, at least initially. Never happened.
Little point in going out and buying more strikers in January until the rest of the squad can learn how to pass and retain possession. The ball rarely finds its way forward in any useful way. Full credit to Charlie for so often tracking back to assist with our continual last-ditch defending. |

If this team was featured in a film, you'd have to call it "The Dispossessed." One wonders just how many of the opposing side would have to get sent off before we could string a few passes together or keep the ball longer than four seconds. We seem to specialize in last ditch defending and speculative long balls forward.
I have been keen on Vargas, but am now wondering just how much upside he has. If his pace and dexterity were matched by his passing, ball retention and shooting, then I guess his name would be Sanchez. I agree he is wonderful to watch. A one man wrecking crew.
At least we were in it with a chance. Painful to watch us under-perform against ten men, but better than a hiding to nothing a la Tottenham. Almost everyone else in the lower reaches of the table lost on the day as well, so to put lipstick on a pig, "it coulda been worse". |
