We managed to work ourselves through of BCs good play, good organisation and pressure and work ourselves into the match with Daniel Peretz producing a great save from a shot just inside our penalty area after a corner at 0-0. Larins fine 1-0 goal made us more comfortable. His second even more so after fine work from Scienza and a bounce out ball to Larin who hammered home at the edge of the 6 yard box after JWPs finish from Scienzas fine cross was blocked. I thought BC were a little lucky with their 1-2 consolation goal but they probably deserved to score at some point anyhow. Matsuki is a great runner with and with out the ball and he ran into space in BCs penalty area to hammer the ball hard and flat into the net from Azaz' fine typical Azaz assist. I loved Mubama coming on and showing he can actually hold up the ball against big ugly defenders and even make a fine assist for one of our great runners, Azaz, who finished with a precise shot just inside the penalty area from Mubamas fine pass. We still take somewhat long to get into matches sometimes, but I like our patience and belief. Worrying to see Downs not come out for the second half with an obvious upper rightsided thigh extensor muscle issue, but Braggy covered well as his substitute.
BC might feel a little unlucky to be hammered 4-1, but that's football sometimes (quite often actually).
Another fine home performance overall by Saints today.
Now 1 or 2 days off before preparing for Wrexham away.

Lincoln with 4 players having played at championship level before + 1 player, (goal scorer Ladefoged) coming from the best league in Sweden (the tallest player on the pitch 4 his 6 foot 9). The rest of Lincolns players came from league 1 and below. Lincoln lived on their tallness and generel physicality and played the most heavy kick & rush ball you will see from any championship team this season.
I thought we controlled things pretty well both before and after Welington scored his first for us; a Roberto Carlos style screamer from 30+ yeards up into the far corner. Beautiful.
5 minutes from the final whistle the Giant Ladefoged suddenly popped up near the far post and cool'ly directed a cross downwards to the ground seing the ball bouncing up into the roof of the goal, leaving goalkeeper Peretz little chance of saving the header.
Larin had to be protected with the many game minutes coming fast an thick and was taken off after an hour. Mubama came on, and though he tried he didn't succeed with his few finishes (one or two headers) and not with his hold up play either - of such importance in a difficult, physical match like this.
We came back with a point though, and we go again on tuesday at St. Mary's - probably as small favourites vs Swansea, who - though being top of table - struggled today in a 0-0 match at home to fellow welsh club Wrexham.

A good result away from home, especially this early in the season.
Saint Andrews is definitely not the easiest place to visit.
That said, when we don't get 3 points away from home - from the following game, home or away - it's important we take all three points. So, 3 points when we visit Lincoln, please.
It should always be our aim to take 3 points from every home game.
This is the requested mindset we must be aiming for.

5-1 and a well deserved, belief rebuilding performance from Saints against a good team with a good manager - as joyful a victory to watch as when we won 5-1 at Wrexham last season, and Slotterbecks and JWPs arrivals seem to have brought some much needed comfort in the group and for us fans. This - and Azaz being in that kind of mood accompanied by very classy displays by Larin and Leo, and all other players are also hitting the day - it suddenly looked very hard to be the visiting team at Saint Mary's.
So good to see.
Could magic suddenly be on its way back after months of hangovers, a shaky start to the season, and a horrible display in the league cup just 4 days ago?
I hope so and believe so.

I hope Downs' head injury heals quickly ; he was certainly also class today until a clash of heads with Braggy meant he had to come off. JWP delivered a fully satisfying substitution for Downs.

According to tactics there comes a point where Saints start to press Stoke when they are in possession in their own half playing the ball around their own box.
So, Downes leaves his man (who is attacking midfielder Bae Jun-ho) to move forward and help Azaz/Larin pressing, which - according to plan - results in Stephens leaving his backline to mark Bae Jun-ho as cover for Downes.
What happens when Stephen is in the proces of running towards Jun-ho?
Jun-ho who has run ten yards inside his own half receives the ball from his centerback and Jun-ho easily rounds Stephens who is three yards behind him with one neet little touch with the out side of his right boot, whereafter he runs towards our goal with an empty highway in front of him.
The ball is then quickly played out to Gallagher on Stokes' righthand side, and he crosses the ball low into our penalty area, where there is no Stephens but an unconconcentrated / unaware Downes, who has just bust a lung to run back and defend , resulting in an easy first time finish ('Frank Lampard type goal') from Stoke midfielder Galbraith.
MUCH too easy for Stoke and certainly not the ideal way to construct our pressure.
Back to the drawing board on that part, please. |

What a game of football. What a performance.
Only thing that annoyes me is that Flynn Downes has these temper outbursts. He f*cking lost his sh*t and could easily have been sent off for his borderline assault on Widell - off the ball - and ultimately cost us 3 points. Get a grip, Flynny!!! He won't start against Bristol C; not in my book anyway but I'm only a monday football manager.
I'm beginning to conclude that Ryan Manning is the best left back in the championship. He was everywhere and was my MOTM in front of Jander and Charles..
Very, very well done to all of the players and to Tonda and his staff. I'm very proud to be a Saints supporter.
Btw , we have not won 7 league games in a row in 118 years and not 8 in all competitions in 130.

We should have won this by a larger margin, but all in all a good performance. Archer had a good game and scored and assisted and won MOTM, which was fine, but Cyle larin was the best player on the pitch, I thought.

What a victory. The last 7-8 minutes were hard though. I was just about to conclude that Charles had made a good appearance from the bench when he fell for the oldest trick in the football world and carelessly didn't avoid contact with the heel of the Coventry players right boot inside the penalty area; back towards the goal, no immediate danger.
Penalty.
So stupid.
But we held on. Peretz almost saved the pen actually. How good has Peretz been for us. Such a solid keeper.

Besides goalie Peretz almost unaliving Mannings lungs with a venomous goal kick directly into Mannings chest region....; a goal kick which was CORRECTLY decided to be re-taken by the ref; otherwise Fulham would be 1-0 ahead by a gift - our boys did really, really, really well at Craven Cottage today and deserved the advancement to the last 8 by a mile. To the pleasure of almost 5000 travelling Saints supporters.

I don't care who we draw in the quarter final as long as it's at home.

Many good performances of which Matzukis was the most eye catching. So good to see. Well done.
Our new keeper has now had 4 clean sheets in 8 matches which is just as important as scoring many goals.
I can see us crash the door into the top 6 before the season is over. If we keep momentum and focus.

Considering Argyles' stats from the last half of last season and the beginning of this season - this was such a great away win. We were the better team on the day, I thought, but we could have lost with that shot on our post very late in the match.
Everyone needs a little luck sometimes - we were due some luck - and to score the winner in minute 94 or 95 was so sweet.
Great win.
We march on.
