Interesting debate. I don't really know what the the answer is, but I do know he gave the ref a decision to make in an area of the pitch, and time in the game, where he probably didn't need to.

I suppose a lot of this hinges on what the definition of 'excessive force' and 'out of control' is.

Have tried looking up the rules. FA website says, "“Using excessive force” means that the player has far exceeded the necessary use of force and is in danger of injuring his opponent."

Note it doesn't say did injur opponent, or anything about stud position etc.

Considerations include:
-Speed
-Intensity
-Force
-Degree of control
-Point and extent of contact (full/limited)

Considerations when contact is made after playing the ball include:
-Controlled action to play the ball
-Available space into which challenge is made
-Awareness and consideration of opponent and their safety
-Is the challenge clearly reckless (yellow card)
or involves excessive force (red card)

Based on that definition, I can see why a red was given. The way Cirkin clatters into his legs, was with enough force to cause an injury. Their player, by contrast, was in control and standing, and wasn't in any danger of causing harm.

I'm not sure I'd appeal it if I was the club, even though another ref may have given it as a yellow. I certainly don't imagine it would be turned over on appeal.

Fans forum tonight anyone going ?

I thought Nourry & Stephan did well tonight and I was surprised at how far they went in some of their answers.

Stephan on Kolli, clearly setting our the standards he has set and all but saying Kolli is not even trying to reach those standards, but the door isn't closed.

V transparent on Kone, but done with positive intent and making clear they back him, even if he's not firing on all cylinders right now.

And re injuries, good to know there has been a Board level discussion on this with a plan put together, discussed and approved. Fair enough they didn't share what this plan is, but I suspect all of these early season managed minutes are a big part of it.

The Dennis Cirkin song

I've got two kids, oldest is a girl, 8, youngest is a boy, 5.

They both LOVED the world cup. They both know loads of QPR songs, and have grown up wearing the kits. I've taken them to a few of the women's games and they had a brilliant time. I've offered to take them to the Development Squad when they next play at Hanwell.

They've asked me a few times if they could come to a men's first team game this season and I've said 'maybe', but I don't think I can bring myself to let them come. I just don't want either of them, but particularly my daughter, exposed to this sort of song.

I guess a lot of folk would think 'good' as they're not old enough yet, but I'm not looking to protect them from every rude word or the visceral anger of the crowd. Just the neanderthal misogyny which we can surely move past.

Team shape 2026/27?

I thought it was a bit of a shame we didn't experiment with 4-2-3-1 at the end of the season, given how little we had to play for.

I think it could bring the best our of our players - we have quite a lot of players who could play well across that 3: Chair; Vale; Madsen; Burrell; Dembele; Smyth; Saito; Poku.

I think it might also bring the best out of Varane, who I don't think suits a 4-4-2, and Kone, who could do a great job making space for the three behind.

I also think 4-2-3-1 can be a little more pragmatic than a 4-3-3.

Where’s the progress?

Trying to capture all of the possible positives in one place (and deliberately ignoring many fair criticisms):

(1) We were comfortably clear of relegation all season, unlike in many recent seasons.

(2) The average age of the squad is far lower than it has been, and lower than many (all?) other championship teams.

(3) Striker options - Kone and Burrell, both of whom have done 'well enough' in their first seasons and have (IMO) higher ceilings to work towards.

(4) Madsen. Hopefully we've all learnt a lesson there about supporting players who are adapting to a new league and country.

(5) Players who we've not seen enough from this season - lots through injury - who I also think have a higher ceiling. Poku, Edwards, Dembele, Vale & Varane IMO. I also think Mbengue can improve, but not as much as the others listed.

(6) This one is maybe stretching it, but...we've achieved a 'safe' season with a horrific injury record. Surely it can't be as bad next season...? Would be nice to at least have Chair, still our best player IMO, back as an option for most of next season.

I'm sure we could write a similar list of negatives, most notably around injuries, but I'd argue we start this summer in a much stronger position than we did last season. A left back and a GK are hopefully much easier to find than a new striker.
