The profit on player disposals is not an asset sale. The balance sheet asset for the player represents the unamortized cost of acquiring them. So profit on disposal will represent the transfer proceeds we receive less that amount. It's not the player who is a balance sheet asset but rather the cost of acquiring them.
For example, imagine a player acquired for £12m on a 4 year contract. Broadly speaking each year of the contract an amortization charge will be sent through the P&L and reduce the balance sheet asset. So £3m reduces profit and £3m reduces the asset.
So on the acquisition, the asset will be £12m
At the end of year 1, the asset will be 12-3 = £9m. Year 2 12-6 = £6m . Year 3 = 12-9 £m and at the end of the contract, the asset would be zero.
In each year the profit in the accounts (P&L) would have the expense of £3m reducing profits plus the player wages (wages are not part of the accounting that drives the accounting gain on a transfer out of the club). Wages go through the profit and loss account when they are paid.
So if you sold that player for £10m
Initially, if you sold immediately you'd have a loss of £2m (£10m - £12m)
if you sold them at the end of the first year £1m (£10m - £9m), after the second year £4m (£10m - £6m) etc.
So by definition a player at the end of their contract or one where there was no purchase price will record the highest profit when sold. |

Totally agree with the dull comments but feel a little guilty to complain. Reality was at the start of the season I was more worried about going a Wolves. Where we are is a credit to Redknapp's ability to create a team and a fair bit of money! But the endless possession but few chances is not fun to watch - and we laughed at Swansea! |

Reality is there can't be too many new fans at the ground on a match day as the capacity of Loftus Rd prevents this. When did Ainsworth last play for us? 3 or 4 years ago. If that fan you mentioned is a youngster then they wouldn't have seen him play which would make the comment understandable. Same old face were I sit that there has been for 20 odd years. So basically I don't subscribe to your point of view Northern. I've seen about 4 Asian faces at Loftus Rd since Parks arrival - hardly endemic proportions.
On the flip side I can't honestly say I've enjoyed our Premiership adventure more than other leagues but I can imagine for most of us the match day experience goes beyond what happens on the pitch.
Always a roller coaster - that's the one fact we can truly say about our club. |
