Rag, tag and bobtail, the Stoke City Matchday Thread
at 16:58 5 Dec 2021

Awful weather, awful performance. I thought they had loads of injuries. We played like Wenger's Arsenal against old skool Stoke. Hopefully Amos gets a start now because he actually put in some challenges when he came on. Midfield were non-existent and Dozzell gave them their opener. And why oh why did Charlie try and place his pen? Terry Fenwick the highlight of the day.

Definitely agree that we gave it everything and that the likes of Dozzell and Odubajo had their best games for us. Went too deep at the end and paid the price but it's still an unfortunate deflection. And ultimately, I think a draw was a fair result - Forest were a lot better than I was expecting and Brennan Johnson looks a real player, even if he never shut up moaning.

Plus, being positive, our fixtures till the end of the year are decent; the caveat being this is the Championship and anyone can beat anyone. If we can go on a run and be in the play-off running come January, then make a couple of decent signings, then who knows.

Still think we need more pace - Johnson had it last night and it means you can transition so quickly, which is something we desperately need. That said, the wing backs were great last night - sad that McCallum went off but Albert was MOTM again.

Yes, Dykes won so many balls last night but most were then picked up by a Sunderland player. It was incredibly frustrating because I thought he played really well. Gray seems to spend most of the game gesturing where someone should have played the ball rather than actually anticipating where knock-ons might be going.

Oh, I'm not bothered about personal attacks; I realise there's a groupthink on here where all but a few think we're doing brilliantly. We've just failed to beat Peterborough and Sunderland, a club that was in League 1 last season and one that still is. We got pulverised by Fulham. We are so slow to break; everything goes sideways and we wait for ages to pick the perfect pass. We only looked dangerous in the last ten minutes when Albert was on because he's actually able to beat a man and cross a ball. And it'll be exactly the same on Friday night - Ball and Johansen in the middle slowing everything down and full backs who can't beat their man or cross the ball.

Let's see where we are at the end of the season - I'm just not seeing this brilliant, free-flowing football that people on here are eulogising about. Yes, it was a shocking decision tonight but we still weren't very good at home against a side in the league below.

The best Rangers teams have had full backs and wingers who could get up the line and cross a ball. We so clearly lack that width unless Albert is on the pitch.

We need width, particularly if we're playing two up top. Ultimately we're a bang average side that had a decent run at the end of the season because there was nothing riding on it. Same as we've been since we were relegated.

Warnock in the play-off zone. Warburton just never seems to learn; we were every bit as slow and shit as last week and our defence is as weak as it was when he took over. If we can't get in the play-offs this season in such a weak league, then we may as well give up.

Abysmal performance today. We're not good enough to leave our best player on the bench and our defence is tragic. Can we get Bonne back please?

How did Charlie miss that chance?

We're not playing very well but Peterborough look a very poor side; I'll be very disappointed if we don't win this. Hopefully we see Amos and Willock soon.

Albert was tremendous second half. Such a funny guy too - when he didn't manage to keep the ball in, he smiles and goes "too slow". Love him and how he plays with a smile on his face.

Regarding Charlie, look at his goals against (Premier League) Everton; that'll do for me. Our problems on Saturday were not down to him.

Gerd Muller would struggle to score with Odubajo supplying the crosses.

Problem areas - loans that became permanent this summer
at 07:34 17 Oct 2021

They'd lost to Blackpool, Reading and Coventry recently. Yes, they have some expensive players but they're not all that. What pissed me off about yesterday was the timid way we played, particularly for a derby; giving them loads of space to pass it around and rarely getting stuck in. We were slow and sclerotic, and both the selection and substitutions were flawed. Most of all, it was the feeling of deja vu from recent trips to both Fulham and Brentford, where our defeat seemed inevitable from the start.

The positive is that we have two winnable games in a week, so we can hopefully be in a better place by then, but I would like us to start turning up in these derbies sooner rather than later.
