Thread | Swindon - What Else is There ?

Once you've seen the magic roundabout (we had the first in the UK remember), seen the locomotive in the out of town shopping mall and if open the museum the answer is not a lot else.
However just outside Swindon are the large exhibition stores of the Science Museum. Very sadly these are very rarely open to the general public and from the reports I have seen there is virtually no conservation being carried out so that historically significant vehicles are sitting on flat tyres and without their engines being turned over occasionally. Very occasionally one is "liberated" by a major uk museum but others will rot and die.
Let's hope we can liberate 3 points. |

Spoilt for choice here. SS Great Britain (the experience recently renamed to avoid upsetting some group or other) the Clifton suspension bridge ( and camera obscura) and the whole waterfront.
Bristol was a major engineering town. Bristol cars were sleek and fast whilst Bristol buses were the mainstay of Eastern National. There were also Bristol aircraft - I seem to remember building an Airfix Bristol Beaufighter. Sadly all no more.
The wide guage Temple Meads Station remains as another reminder of Brunel.
Bristol once had a large orphanage. However by about 1900 there were fewer orphans so they took in children from large families who were unable to cope. So an aunt and two uncles spent some time there.
Bristol hotels are expensive. Stay at Portishead by the refurbished Dock and catch the bus in. It passes all the sights. |

Thread | Accrington - What Else Is There ?

Mrs Witham and I try to make a couple of days of it when we are away, so I'm trying to show what our opponent's towns or areas have of interest.
Apart from the dubious honour of being an early club to fold mid-season Accrington was also the most-remembered town to form a Pals Battalion early in World War 1. The concept may have been good but the result, with 584 out of 720 killed, wounded or missing in action was disastrous for the town. The new memorial is worth a look.
Prior to that Accrington was also a leader in introducing steam trams. Their extremely tall funnels gave the the nickname of the Baltic Fleet - a nod to the Kaisers' navy. Colchester never had steam trams - we did have steam trains running in the road to the gasworks but I never saw them.
Not actually in Accrington but adjacent in Burnley, the Singing Tree - technically a Panopticon - is worth a visit. Even in a gentle breeze it sings to you. |

I was unsure why Turner didn't feature on Friday. I understand that Tom Smith may have had his appendix out, hence his absence but Tovide was also a noticeable absentee. |

Perhaps it will ease the aftermath congestion getting onto the A12.
Have just visited the Bari stadium. Loads of car parking at 3 euros a go. Mind you the capacity is 55,000 but they still barely match our new average |

I now want Scunthorpe to come up. It's an easier drive than Rochdale, there's plenty of parking at their ground and it's a reasonable stadium.

On Friday night we showed our class and that's what is so disappointing. But it gives me great hope for the future as it showed there was a consistency in our training so everyone sang from the same hymn sheet. |

What was disappointing was the renewal of chanting against Robbie Cowling from the South Stand who collectively couldn't match his annual financial support. I have seen posts suggesting that we should have funded Lyle Taylor for this season rather than Mbick which obviously came from someone who forgot Taylor's fitness struggles.
If they want to chant about anything it should be the EFL for the variable quality of refereeing, although I see that it's as bad in the National League according to Braintree. |

The team were booked in to stay at the hotel for the game which was called off ! However even when we played Man Utd and had earned a cup bonus we travelled up on the day. |

Spoke to a Chesterfield supporter after the game who didn't believe that it was a penalty but felt we just didn't want the game and they did.
Team only had a buffet at our hotel and not staying overnight. Have complained they obviously fed them too well.
Felt Tovide did his bit as instructed but nobody else went with him in closing down. |
