Thread | Not fun, not big, not clever

I didn't go today.
It was not that I couldn't face another 4 hour roundtrip after Monday's jaunt to Swansea. It was a small matter of a mother-in-law in pallative care, a pregnant wife gone to look after her, her father and her sister in panic stations, and the fact that neglecting my babysitting duties for a day in the sunshine would probably have put a downer on things.
So I resorted to watching that beautiful game online, and boy, was it a fight.
The first few minutes were a fight because my 3-year old decided to battle it out with me for possession of the TV remote. She wanted to watch her buddies Peppa and Blippi, and i wanted to see if I could spot any mates in the crowd.
She won the battle. Mostly because she yelled more and I couldn't take the histronics. You have the Ipad AND the remote, kid. I'll grab the laptop and we can all be happy.
Well, watching that dross for the best part of 2 hours was something that you couldn't describe as a fun experience. Like my parenting ways left when left alone with my daughter, it was a little half-arsed on the edge of disaster.
QPR could - and should - have been 1-0 down at the break, with Dean Windass' son providing one of the misses of the season. The second half, we were stuck on the blocks, so much so that our spikes were in the wood and we weren't really straining to get out of them.
Sam Field doesn't close down his man. A comical deflection. 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday. The hordes on the top of the School End celebrate. The TV angles are more apt to show the celebrations of an away end more than the home one, and the Northerners looked happy.
Meanwhile in my household, Poppy was happy and silent. I was unhappy but ensuring that my words of rage were sent out to my QPR friends' Whatsapp group.
Anderson hits the bar. I groan. Poppy looks around. And turns back. I turn around.
Not going to be our day, is it?
Three pretty clear heading chances go missing with Dunne, Armstrong and Dykes the culprits. Then, nothing, until Wednesday take the 2-0 lead.
I could have done with a break. I really could have done. It's not been the easiest few days. Wait a minute. It's been a f**king rough few days. I wanted QPR to provide a break. I was almost mentally begging them to.
But they didn't.
The wife's offered me the chance to go to Plymouth away (I live about an hour away). I already have the ticket.
If we're this crap on Tuesday night, it might be the death of me. |

1) It didn't seem there today. The atmosphere, the team, the energy. Just...nothing. It was like we'd packed so much emotion into Leicester and West Brom that an (on paper) easier game against a team that Boro fans told me were "crap", that this was rather, you know, listless.
2) Carrick worked us out pretty easily. Anderson puts the ball to Chair. Chair is faced with three men like the famoust Maradona v The Dutch photo, Chair passes it back because there are no alternatives. Anderson doesn't bother switching it over to Willock on the right, who had half of West London on the right time after time again. We can blame Chair all we want, but we can't expect him to be Moroccan Stanley Bowles when other teams are recognising who our best player is and doubling or tripling him up accordingly.
3) Because of taking out Chair, we ran out of ideas incredibly quickly. Boro got brave moving up the pitch...
4) And then lived in our half for the first half of the second half until the first goal. Bad defending for the goals? Well, when you've got a tired, not great, and pretty exhausted central defense to face with two pacey players - and you work out that simply whacking the ball across isn't the way forwoard, then we became easy to break down. And we were.
5) We offered nothing that second half, apart from Smyth's half chance, where I felt he was tugged back. Had he gone down....you've seen 'em given...
6) Great to see Seny Dieng back. Loved him at LR.
7) Boro did a job on us. Plain and simple.
Onto Sunderland for the latest of our must-win games.

Before the game, I had mentally planned to leave early with us 4-0 down so I could make a connection to Exeter, where I now reside.
After all, there wasn’t going to be a prayer of beating top of the table Leicester at their place, was there?
Well, Queens Park Rangers once again put paid to any plans I’d had.
And they answered some questions, too.
Focus for 90-odd minutes and despite an utterly crap ref who I called a c**t about 20 times in the second half? Check.
Willock working his arse off? Check.
Lyndon Dykes playing brilliantly as what felt like a 4-5-, holding up the play and then skinning the defender and delivering an exquisite ball to Ilias Chair’s outstretched boot and causing a 3001 roaring mosh pit to deafen the KPower? Check.
Armstrong smashing in the second and standing like a statue as others clambered on him, watching on as me and 3001 of my best friends displayed more limbs as we went up 2-0? Check.
Bad goalkeeping from Begovic to make it 2-1 and make all of the 3001 away fans extremely nervous? Check.
QPR being pretty comfortable after the goal and completing the destruction of another batting slip who had us as a dead cert to lose today? Check.
Huggy puddle, fist of exhalation and joy? Check.

I understand why Warburton was fired.
Our season had fallen so badly that we were lucky that the game ran out.
The appointment of Mick Beale was an excellent one. People move to bigger jobs all the time. I don’t like what he did, but football is a business. He managed to knife QPR AND Giovanni Van Brockhorst in the back in one fell swoop. It took some doing.
And the appointment of Critchley may have looked good on paper, but it didn’t work out.
Honestly, I don’t understand who the fanbase wants to get in.
Why would you get rid of Les Ferdinand? The man’s a club legend and helped to steer us to some sort of financial stability. I don’t understand what he could have done more. |

I keep on thinking back to the FA Cup Game at Peterborough, when we squandered 102 chances, and failed to come away with the win.
We have been pretty much beatable since then, the injury disease has set in with the sort of speed that most school flus would be impressed with, and suddenly we're freefalling towards the warm comfort of 16th place - out of play-off contention but also away from relegation.
I still wonder what would have happened if we'd won that game. Would we have gone on to still be in the play-off battle? Or would we be where we are right now?
Anyway, that's my musing for the day. |

I’m coming back from Houston to have New Year with the family and on the way down to my in-laws I’ve been granted permission by the wife to go to Birmingham Away.
But thanks to the fact I moved country, I didn’t renew my membership, so my God-know-how-many loyalty points have been lost in the ether.
Anyway, does anyone who’s not going have their membership number so I can go with my mates instead of sitting in the home end?

Tomorrow I won't be at Loftus Road for the first game of the season.
I'll be watching from my sofa in Houston, Texas, trying to keep my voice down for fear of waking up my 7-month old with terrible language and heightened voice.
But I know that QPR's the heroin, because I want it injected into my veins every week from August to May. I just spent 12 quid of 1 1/2 games of friendlies, and got the Cambridge game off a YouTube feed where I could swear the cameraman decided to take ketamine before filming. And I know that one minute I'll be cheering, the other moment I'll be fuming, and almost all the time my wife will be questioning my sanity (more's the case i do, when I have to listen to Nick London and Andy Sinton for the commentary).
Watching Rangers on QPR+ is not the same. If we score and I'm there, I'd be hugging Brendan who sits behind me and Tony who sits next to me, and gently making fun of the still-drunk 30 year-old who sometimes saunters in after imbibing and snorting his Friday night away. Now, I hug air and cheer along with a Greek friend/QPR exile, who I have to be careful to be around because our internets are on delay from each other, and sometimes he knows what happens before I do, and sometimes he doesn't.
But even in America, I can still question the actions of the Metropolitan Police, who decided to tell 3,000 South London Shreks that O'Neill's is the designated away pub. It's basically a "Hey, if you want police hassle, go here, but if you want to smash pubs up, then go to a bunch of other ones" (Let's hope the evil hordes of Mordor don't drift by The Richmond (seemingly an away designation for every team in recent years), in an effort to avoid shit from 'The Filth'. If you think they are going to book seats, you have another thing coming.
But weirdly, there is something awesome about a filled away end. It adds to the atmosphere. There's something awesome about seeing an away end go absolutely mental. Because I know that I've been on the other end of it when I go to away game when another teams scores, seeing the fanbase jump all over each other and freaking out like a bunch of epileptics. Being a home fan seems slightly more....staid. Maybe that's why I prefer the away games. But as ever, the Milwall fans will get let off for monkey gestures, racially abusing stewards, ripping up seats and threatening ladies and children en route, because it'll be forgiveable, because no-one likes them (a quick adage: A friend of mine who's a Millwall fan and a former football hooligan who despised gay people and black people back in his drinking years, is now married to a black woman, has a gay son and is 25 years sober). I don't know if they gave abuse to black England players during the Euros, but I do know this: I'll miss singing he chant "No-one likes you, because you're s**t/scum/c**ts/w*nkers" at the knuckle-dragging t**ts.
I will miss little things about Loftus Road, like the hugs, the closeness to the pitch that makes everyone swear to God that you've got a tiny pitch (I was asked this by an American Chelsea fan. I replied with 'P*ss Off, mate"), meeting my friends by the tree on the corner outside of the Loft End, chatting at half-time about what's gone wrong, or catching up with old friends to talk about the same thing.
In fact, it's less 'will miss', and more 'I miss it'. And it's going to be worse this season, because the fans are back in the grounds, packed in like sardines, and yelling for the team.
So have a nice day 'y'all' and I will be thinking about you. Less about the football, and more about Captain Jack and the railway track.

A few points after the game at Hull:
1) We played better football than we did against Stoke and Rotherham. That's not saying much.
2) Giving Bowen that much room will hurt. After the first one you would have thought to close him down, but they didn't.
3) Bidwell has no confidence in Lynch whatsoever. Nor does anyone else. He was again abysmal today, save from an attacking header from a Bidwell corner that was well-saved by Marshall.
4) The away crowd at half-time was as downbeat as I have seen it. The most popular words I heard from people's mouths were: "This club's a ****ing shambles", "Get McLaren out", and "I fancy putting £10 on us to get relegated at 150/1"
5) Bringing Bright-Samuel was an excellent idea. Having a bit of a pace frightened the life out of Hull's defence, and gave us in the away end a bit of energy too. Also, the subsitution of Scowen after the injury to Freeman was actually the best thing to happen to Rangers. He was excellent. His goal was up there with Pele's cracker in 1970, and his pass to Hemed for the second was sublime - even if the ball he 'kept' in was marginal at best.
6) Eze looked like the Eze of old when he attacked the Hull defense. They didn't know how to deal with him. He could have won us the game with the free-kick that went wide off the post.
7) 8 points clear of the relegation zone. Thanks, Norwich! |

Also, don’t know if anyone saw the highlights yesterday, but with the fight during the game, the foul was bad, but what was interesting was the reaction. He stamped on Furlong’s head (sorry, left his boot in), and then fell over ‘in pain’, and then lay on the ground as Bedlam ensued. The tackle from Furlong and the subsequent reaction - in my view- were both reds. The fight? Handbags. No-one threw a proper punch. |

Steve McClaren may have said that we should have won the game, but on reflection, it could have been 3-3 or even 4-4 and anyone would have been complaining.
Poor defending on both sides accounted for our first and Rotherham's second, and two lovely finishes accounted for the other. As well as that Lumley and Rodak made good saves, with Rodak producing a pair of beauties from Freeman and Eze.
The second half performance was a lot better than the first. While in the first half it was difficult to try and work out who in the hell actually played well (I came up with no-one, with Cameron the biggest question mark (My big question: Did he eat too much turkey on his Thanksgiving break?)). You could have driven a Coca-Cola Christmas truck through the middle of Toni and Lynch, who looked their years on a rainy night in Rotherham.
The second half was a lot better, with Freeman once again doing well.
A lot of love is out there for Eze, who was great in parts and in parts was plain lazy. Wells huffed and puffed, and Smith and Hemed's arrival gave their defence headaches without actually scoring.
Also: People behind me were pointing to Pav's miss about being "the worst they've ever seen", but I think that he thought he was offside and then when the ball came across, he was all in a flap. It wasn't so much a terrible miss as a split of concentration. Wells would have finished it with ease. Considering his goal against Villa, I can give him that one.
What pleased me the most was the fact that our club never gave up. Last season, we could have quite easily had no points this week from 6. This week we have two.
Onwards and upwards.

Thread | Hull tickets - Quite a good deal from the club(s)

The bad news is that I've managed to extract myself from the joys of Derby (where I've now moved) for Saturday to go to beautiful Hull to see the mighty Hoops win there for the first time since 1991 (we won 3-0 in the League Cup apparently, and no I don't know who scored).
Anyway, I called the club and they asked me what tier of tickets I wanted.
There's a choice between £18 and £25. And apparently the tickets are not segregated, although the man at the box office warned me that "you can't sit in the £25 seats with a £18 ticket".
The £18 option must be the cheapest ticket option we've had for tickets all season, which is stunning to me.
Anyway, with that and the beautiful 2016-7 shirts that they are giving us, this is a pretty good deal.
