Showing my age here, but back in the 60's we had a full back called Joe Kirkup, decent RB from WHU but Ted Bates tried him out at LB sometimes which was a disaster. My Uncle Fred who took me to The Dell nicknamed him 'Gentleman Joe' in the way he approached the attacking winger, and then gave way, gestured his arm to one side and said 'After You' to allow his opponent the freedom of the by line!! LOL! |

Tipping is engrained into the US hospitality industry but I still find it utterly distasteful. Many moons ago I was leaving a restaurant in New York opposite Central Park, nothing special but I tipped 10% of the bill (the norm back then), and was astonished when the Maitre De followed me into the back of the Yellow Cab, waving the bill at me, asking me what was wrong, was the food so awful etc etc. One of my life's regrets was that I paid him an extra five bucks to get out of my face :( |

I couldn't make it but my older brother was there and told me there was a terrier which appeared on the pitch from the Palace fans end, and somehow ended up with the Saints fans who held it aloft and predictably came up with the chant "We've got your doggie, we've got your doggie..." Anyone remember this or possibly an urban myth??!! |

...and wasn't it just five years ago we beat Liverpool 1-0 at St Mary's and for a wonderful fleeting weekend to go top of the Premiership, RH sobbing on the touchline at the final whistle if I remember! |

I was on a trip combining business and pleasure and stayed in an amazing bohemian hotel in the Kings Cross area overlooking the beautiful Elizabeth Bay. Response tonight from one of my best mates and a lifelong Rangers fan when I asked him about Martin:
'Absolute clown. Trying to impose passing out from the back when passing is low on our list of skills. Giving other teams numerous chances often self inflicted. 27 shots against us last night 21 inside the box is outrageous. That is 101 in just 6 games including Kilmarnock and Dundee. We have been playing terrible football. Even if we win our next game we will face Celtic with them looking to go 7 points clear after 4 games. Their pressing game will tear us apart. And we will go out of Champions League next week though that might be a mercy.
Not sure he will reach October'

I remember going to the 'old' Valley Stadium in the late 70's, a huge place with vast spaces of open terracing, which the farther you climbed up, the more weeds and foliage would be sprouting up from between the steps. I read somewhere that the ground capacity back then was something like 75,000! |

Have a best mate who's a Watford STH, and reckons Cleverley was one of the best Manager's they've had in recent times, astute, adapts play formations depending on opponents, shrewd use of substitutes etc. His season was knocked off course by crucial injuries to key forwards, and a young squad who struggled to fill in.
I'd throw his hat into the ring in our search for a new Manager. |

I wouldn't worry about Gloucester.
I used to work in the greetings card business and WH Smith used to tell us that year after year their store with the LOWEST sales of Father's Day cards, across the whole country, was always the Gloucester branch, the inference being that so few people in the city knew who their real dad was! Nuff said! |

‘It is with regret that we have to announce the departure of Ivan Juric and his team from Southampton Football Club. Whilst Ivan came to us with the highest of recommendations and an impressive track record, the results and performances since he has been in charge have been very disappointing for everyone involved. We therefore feel the need to act now and bring a new vigour and direction to the first team for what remains of the 2024-25 season.
With that ambition in mind, we are promoting Simon Rusk to First Team Coach with Adam Lallana as his assistant coach until further notice. We are confident that Simon and Adam can engender a new discipline, rigour and tactical confidence to the playing squad that will re-invigorate our displays on field, and which will ultimately lead to winning games and restoring the fans faith in the club as we build for the rest of the season and beyond.
In the meantime, we would like to thank Ivan Juric for all his efforts and wish him the very best for the future’

I've had a fiver on us to win @ 12/1 which I reckon are OK odds in a two-horse race. Granted its highly unlikely but every season at this level can throw up a freak result. Like Nathan's 2-0 denying Citeh their 'quadruple'. |

Someone told me today that Billy scored the winner for Doncaster against Yorkshire rivals Bradford on Saturday. Flippin Henry, if that's right the guy must be in his 40's by now!
Will always remember his time with us, scored some vital goals and gave the impression he would run through brick walls for Saints. |

Watford FA Cup replay at home last season, they couldn't lay a glove on him, pure class. I agree he needs to start against Newcastle (who in turn are unlikely to have done their 'homework' on him). Is Russell brave enough? |

...one year on and I remember being at Loftus Road watching the young Shearer and Paul Rideout filleting the QPR defence in a 4-1 massacre. With both Micky Adams and Raymond Wallace out injured, we started that game with our two reserve full backs, Messrs J.Dodd & F.Benali.
The rest, as they say, is history. |

Luckily you weren't at the away game at Sunderland, March 1978, I was at Durham Uni at the time and hooked up with a dozen or so Saints fans who'd travelled up from the New Forest that morning. They had about two overcoats between them as the icy gales seared into Roker from the North Sea.
'It wasn't this cold in Ringwood yesterday' said the girl sitting next to me as her lips started to turn blue. |
