We looked more solid as the game went on and a good goal (his first?) by Brown. Still plenty of work to do mind. Oldham just ran out of ideas and looked poor towards the end. Watching on TV you can hear their fans comments. They're not a happy bunch tonight !! |

A good start and a well taken goal but let's be honest; they should be at least 1 or 2 goals ahead...mainly due to our keeper; their awful misses and the lack of any spine for us upfront. Brown is not offering anything as a target and being completely bossed by Monthe. They are getting well on top in midfield due to having an extra man there
I hate saying this, but Ramming needs to be dropped.
Hope we can fine tune things in the second half. If we continue as we have, we will surely concede a goal or two.

Pleased with a point and a clean sheet, but it was awful stuff for the fans to watch. Plenty of effort from the defenders; Moss and Flint especially, but there are several players just not performing. On another day we would have lost by 2 or 3 goals whilst seldom threatening to score. Hopefully, 1 or 2 of the injuries will soon clear up and we will see an improvement in the coming weeks.
I still just can't see what IW is trying to do shape wise and it makes a mockery of his appointment promise to play attacking entertaining football. Wilson and Mani are not good enough for this level I'm afraid whilst Ramming (a decent shot stopper) just doesn't command his 6 yard box well enough. I'm hopeful that Gilmour will improve but he seems slower than last year and less able to win the ball in midfield without giving free kicks away.
Having now listened to the fans forum, I think the Board know all too well how the supporters feel, but are on the defensive because they made a poor call in appointing IW.
Annoying, because much of the off field operation is progressing really well. |

Strange to take Hannant off. Wilson keeps getting told off by fellow defenders for not picking up his man.
Overall it's better but our 2 forwards don't look like scoring.

A frighteningly well thought out summary of where we currently sit. I hope the Board read it and compare it to their pre-forum article (also well written and argued)
Worryingly, Chaff doesn't even mention the alarming loss of form of two of our best players last season; Gilmour and Mani. Both currently looking shadows of the players we all know they can be.
I sincerely hope to be proven wrong, but I can't see anything other than a sound beating at Walsall at the weekend followed by another very difficult game against Oldham.

Tend to agree that there are quite a few people who don't appreciate just how important a job Simon Gauge (and Richard Knight) did when we were so very close to going out of business. Without the money they put in, we simply wouldn't have a club to support and for that, we should be very thankful.
That is totally different to also agreeing that they haven't always got decisions right. Stockdale especially, and latterly Watson would seem to be good examples of that, whilst McNulty was a big success. It's very obvious that the Ogdens have been hugely important in investing, bringing stability and planning for the future, but it does seem that we are lacking in "football experience" on the Board. |

There are so many danger signals surrounding Maguire it's amazing that they were somehow all overlooked or missed.
Back in 2019, he missed a significant time because of a heart condition.
Injuries and illness have followed him around much of his career.
With a history of injuries like this; he should be on a pay as you play deal.
What are we doing regarding background checks on potential players? Perhaps one for the forum...if it goes ahead. |

Made a bang average Gillingham side look like Real Madrid in the second half. No fight, stupid decisions by individual players, and most of all, hopeless management from the dugout. To leave Mani on so long should be enough to get IW sacked on its own. Bring Henderson on for 3 minutes? WTF? And still bring everyone back when they have a corner and we're 4-0 down??? Incredible.
Sorry, but IW and co have undone all the green shoots from Tuesday and actually regressed us to possibly the worst 45 minutes I can recall for a very long time.
Another weekend of depression looms. Big call now for the Board after backing him so well. Surely he will be gone before the forum, or it will have to be cancelled for the good of everyone. |

Pretty much my thoughts. We look ok but not as attack minded as on Tuesday. A few shots needed, together with a few more runs from midfield to compliment the hard work of Adeeko, who was very good.
Mani needs to go to the gym; he's getting outmuscled too often for a big chap.
Their goal was a lovely shot but surely he had way too much space cutting in from the right wing? Apart from that, Gills look fairly agricultural and I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more cards after half time. |

So much better all round tonight. Our left hand side caused them no end of problems in the first half, and we were deservedly two up before half time. They could have pulled a goal back a couple of times before we broke and scored the third.
A welcome confidence boost throughout the whole club.

Hurts me to say it but Mani D has been an absolute shadow of the player we had last season. Can only think he wants away such is his lack of involvement. Or perhaps National League is his level ? Or he's carrying an injury? Or he simply doesn't want to play for IW?
Either way, signing another injury prone striker to possibly replace him (Jay Bird) would be a huge gamble. |

The stock of the Board is high at the moment following last seasons promotion, and their obvious financial input which will always be remembered fondly. However, sometimes, it's the correct thing to do to admit that you've dropped a clanger, and very sadly, this appointment falls into the clanger category. Little pedigree beforehand and zero League experience coupled with IW promising exciting attack minded football and delivering negative garbage with no obvious structure should tell the Board all they need to know. Combine this with several of last seasons better players simply not buying into whatever he is telling them to do should make parting company an easy but very costly mistake.
History tells us the rookie managers are more likely to struggle than succeed. Sadly, this appointment smacks more of a Walter Joyce than a Robbie Stockdale or Steve Eyre type style. Older readers may need to look up our record under Joyce, and what he did to a successful team in a short period of time.
So sad that much of the feel good atmosphere from Summer has already been replaced by thoughts of a relegation back from whence we came. So far; this team would be in the bottom 4 of the National League such is their confusion and lack of off field leadership. |

I don't think we underestimated them. anyone could see they are streets ahead of their team of last season based on the TV game against York alone. I think they bossed the game for lengthy periods today but we were yet again awful. I have yet to see anything that indicates that we will be other than in a relegation battle, and so far we don't have enough soldiers.
Agree that their opening goal was amateurish from Moss initially, and then from the back three combined. They could and probably should have had a second shortly afterwards following another run down our right, with Moss again left chasing shadows. |

Very worrying that I feel almost exactly the same. I know we are missing several key players, but it's the tactics that are wrong from the Management and the fitness and work rate of players who performed well last year is miles off what's required.
Referee is a Kettle. Say no more. However; Crawley bossed us almost everywhere today . That's unacceptable. |

Not even sure it is any better than last week tbh. Moss is getting skinned at RFB and Sherring looks below par for L2.
Mani hasn't had a sniff in 1 and a half games now, and midfield look very pedestrian with the ball.
We need to leave at least one player upfield when defending set plays. It's just coming straight back if we clear it.
And we look sluggish all over compared to them.
Wilson probably the brightest of our players so far, but the bar is not set too high. [Post edited 22 Aug 16:10]

Can't recall him either, so he can't have played that many games for us. And who is Vince Ratcliffe? I remember Vinny Leech being excellent alongside Billy Rudd in midfield.
I do remember Colin Blant and Arthur Marsh who came a couple of years later. Blant had been at Burnley and was a no nonsense (or just plain dirty) centre half who probably would have been sent off in most games these days. Arthur Marsh came from Bolton, and could head the ball further than most players could kick it. Proper old school players. Reminded me of Oddjob from James Bond. |
