"It was one of the best feelings I've had in my life today," he told BBC Sport.
"That moment was one of the best feelings I've had in a long, long time. All the hard work and to get a moment like that - I couldn't be prouder.
"I've had some tough, tough times, so to keep pushing and keep going - as you have to do in football - and then to get a moment like today that was really special for me," he added.

FORMER Colchester United winger John-Kymani Gordon has signed for Central Coast Mariners.
The 23-year-old, released by the U's at the end of last season, has signed for the Australian A-League side.
"Coming to Australia and joining the Mariners is a completely new challenge for me, but that was a big part of what attracted me to the opportunity.
"I've had some really good experiences in England and now I want to come here, play football, and show what I can bring to the team.
"I've heard a lot about the Mariners, the supporters, and how important the club is to the local community.
"I'm looking forward to meeting the boys, getting out on the pitch, and hopefully giving the fans plenty to be excited about."
The winger made 67 league and cup appearances for Colchester during his two years at the JobServe Community Stadium, arriving in the summer of 2024 from Crystal Palace.
The former Carlisle United loanee, who spent pre-season with Johnnie Jackson's AFC Wimbledon, concluded last season on loan at National League side Rochdale.

FORMER U'S: Ex-Colchester United defender signs for National League high fliers:
FORMER Colchester United defender Will Wright has joined National League leaders Boreham Wood.
The 29-year-old joins the Hertfordshire club from Barnet on a three-year deal.
Wright told the Boreham Wood FC website: "It's all very exciting.
"It's obviously a very exciting time for the club, for myself and for the fans.
"Hopefully the club can go one better and hopefully I'm here to help that and we can achieve the obvious goal the club has set out."
Wright joined Colchester from Hitchin Town in 2017 and regularly played for their under-23s under Wayne Brown.
In October 2017, he first joined the U's senior squad for a Football League Trophy match against Gillingham.
He joined Dagenham & Redbridge permanently in summer 2019 after a successful season-long loan, having made no senior appearances for Colchester.
Wright made nearly 150 appearances for the Daggers over four years, scoring seven goals before joining Gillingham in summer 2022.
He spent a year with the Gills before joining Crawley Town , where he made more than 50 league and cup appearances. He then joined Swindon in summer 2024.
Wright spent two years at Swindon, making nearly 100 league and cup appearances, many as captain, before joining Barnet in summer 2025.
Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard said: "Will is someone I have admired for some time, he has real quality in possession of the football and is a perfect fit for our style and the way we play.
"He brings a wealth of experience having been in the EFL for the last five seasons and he is coming into his twilight years, and we know we can get the best out of him.
"He joins a very competitive squad and will bring much-needed competition in our defensive unit.
"I look forward to seeing him play and progress with us and no doubt he will fit in seamlessly into the group on and off the pitch."

FORMER Colchester United favourite Gavin Massey has announced his retirement.
The 33-year-old attacker, who played for the U's between 2012 and 2016, has confirmed he is hanging up his boots.
Writing on social media, Massey said: "After 16 years in the professional game it's definitely the right time to retire from football.
"Football has been such a massive part of my life with having many highs but also many lows.
"From starting out at 6 to making my professional debut at 17, playing 565 games, to winning leagues, to being relegated.
"All great experiences to now pass down to the next generations @masseyfootballacademy "Absolutely loved it. A dream to a reality.
"Thankyou to everyone who's been a part of the journey!"
Massey made 178 league and cup appearances for Colchester during his four-and-a-half year stint with the club, scoring 21 goals.
With his skill, versatility and positive attitude, he quickly endeared himself to Colchester fans after initially arriving at the club as a fresh-faced teenager on loan from Watford in January 2012, snapped up by John Ward.
Massey twice scooped the Colchester United 'Players' Player of the Year' accolade before leaving to join Leyton Orient, in 2016. |

“A two legged final in the southern section got us of to a nightmare start, a 2-0 defeat at London Road blew our Wembley dreams apart.
7 days later what a night we saw, helped on by the Barside roar! Twiggy and Buckle reduced the arrears and Paul Abrahams wiped away our tears!!!”
What a night that was! Almost 30 years ago (18 March 1997) 5,000 people crammed into Layer Road for an ‘Auto Windscreens Shield’ dead rubber! Or so they thought. However, as the famous Special Duties song went (above), Chris Fry, Paul Buckle and Colchester born Paul Abrahams scored the goals to send the majority of the crowd onto the Layer Road carpet to smother their heroes (before they could make it to The Drury Arms) after they secured their place in the final of the Auto Windscreens Shield at the old Wembley. As you all know, this was to be the second of three trips to Wembley in the 90s!
As a young 13-year-old, I along with a group of friends took our seats in the Clock-End. Apart from Abrahams’ goal and jumping the small barrier to get on the pitch my memory of the actual match is grainy. Needless to say though that this game goes down in the memory of most Col U fans of a certain generation as one of the best!
So, 30 years later, can The U’s find a way to end the Wembley draught and make our way to the famous Stadium for the first time since the re-development?
Now named the Vertu Trophy (maybe), or Bristol Street Motors Trophy (maybe) or maybe the Football League Trophy does not currently have a sponsor? This tournament has faced persistent controversy primarily due to the inclusion of Premier League and Championship Under-21 academy teams. Lower-league supporters frequently stage widespread boycotts in protest of B-teams/U-21 sides entering the pyramid, leading to record-low crowds at many fixtures. Strict competition regulations have forced awkward tactical workarounds, such as managers making immediate substitutions one minute into a match simply to comply with starting-eleven player quotas. However, the Cowleys have talked in recent seasons about taking the competition seriously, knowing full well that this, and the play-offs are the only realistic ways of smaller clubs like Colchester United have of getting to Wembley.
Last season, Col U topped their Group which contained old foes Wycombe, Gillingham and Former U’s manager Hayden Mullins’ Fulham U21 team. 3 wins from 3 and so into the “hat” for the next round and a guaranteed home match against a team that came 2nd in their group. Unlucky for Colchester, that team happened to be a strong West Ham U21 XI that ended up winning 0-1 and ending our campaign for another season.
Onto this season then, and although I have been refunded back my money from Colchester United for the Col U TV debacle, I am still unable to watch any ‘Full Match Replays’, so my predictions for the team line-up etc come from Extended Highlights and reviews on here and the official Col U Message board.
A chance to give The U’s reserves and youngsters a run-out in a “competitive” match against a Peterborough team that has parted company with First Team Manager Luke Williams after the performance against Doncaster Rovers the Board felt it had no other choice but to make a change. The Posh currently sit 23rd in League One winning just once after 7 league matches. However, the former Swansea City and Notts County boss lasted less than 11 months in the job, having replaced Darren Ferguson - who was in his fourth spell with the club - when the Posh were bottom of the table in October 2025. It was Luke Williams who persuaded Owura Edwards to join them on a free transfer from The U’s in the summer, so it will be interesting to see how a change of management will affect Edwards’ performances going forward.

Colchester United's EFL Trophy clash against Luton Town has been brought forward three days.
Danny, Nicky and the squad will now take on the Hatters on Saturday 3rd October, instead of the original date of October 6th.
The U's were due to host Port Vale at the JobServe Community Stadium, but that fixture was postponed due to Vale's international call-ups so it will now be Jack Wilshere's side visiting north Essex, with the game kicking off at 3pm.
All tickets and car park permits purchased for the original fixtures will remain valid for this rearranged date/time. |
