There were 3 such incidents. All 3 times it was Kone. First was a let off, subsequent corner Kone was wise to it and moved into that space as the defender made the move, and cleared. For the goal Kone was watching the sunset for the identical move. He was the same tallest player on the pitch, but peeled off around the back and maybe us wanting to keep out CH’s in the middle leaves us open to such moves. It’s a clever move. The left foot delivery is usually spot on, CH’s distracted in the middle, giant on the back post has a good chance of getting on it regardless of being marked, or not. Especially, as he’s likely not up against a CH because of his positioning. No challenge and he can probably close his eyes before heading it.
Separately, Varane was our best player in the first half. Every ball through the lines came from him, as well as the one to Dembele for Kones blocked shot just after our goal. He did follow that up by kicking it out of play a minute later, and for some reason thought the ball was going out for the 2nd goal - BUT it wouldn’t have changed things. Adamson did exactly the same and was so slow to attempt to get out to the wide man. I find Varane frustrating at times, but not because he’s a poor player, but because he will have a brain fart at some point to erase the memory of all the positive things he’s done. His partner in the middle is who folk should be scrutinising, but I’ll leave that to them as some players have off days. To me he looked leggy from the start and the first time I heard his name in the 2nd half was on the 73rd minute. Could be feeling the pace of the league following (I presume) a season playing little first team football. Or, who knows maybe he has a heavy cold. I would have helped him by switching for JCS, but maybe he’s on the bench for an emergency, rather than risking him for a tactical change. All in, we played well in the first half against a decent side who will create lots of chances in every game they play. Just didn’t come out for the 2nd half, but we move on. A point from each of the past 3 is no bad outcome from this tricky period. |

Kemper is in for a torrid time. He’s too slow to be marking Bowen. Yes, likely Smyth with him, but if he gets isolated they’ll be resting Bowen within the hour. He had it hard enough in the early stages of the pompey game. |

Putins right hand man was cleaning their ill gotten gains for nearly 20 years, so far worse. I say fine City £10m, properly draw the line and move on.
Otherwise walk into every club unannounced with auditors. All these ridiculous fees being paid between certain clubs for youth players to help each other balance the books needs to stop, too.

Hopefully he’ll learn safety first from that and take the corner on the chin. Can see why he might have tried to leave it to Edward’s in the moment. Had a great game other than that though.

It's only a distraction (or hunt) by a bunch of silly ol' c*888 online, here and whatever right wing run social media hate platform they engage with. I don't know anybody in the stands who buys into all this crap. Some are distracted by the words of some who should know better, but the reality is most fans would love to see him fit and in the team. Sadly, he's been injured again this first part of the season, nothing more. And all this nonsense about him being lazy...he looks nothing but lively when he's on the pitch and presses hard when we're playing that way. I can't wait to see him out on the pitch again. |

The one that looks on - look at their feet only and you'll see that it's clearly off. Idiots in the studio going on about maybe he was leaning off. Nonsense - his feet are clearly further forward, so his lean definitely puts him off. |

They were sitting in and it needed a clever intricate moment from a tricky player, rather than pointless crosses. None of our tricky players, Chair, Saito, Poku were involved tonight. We constantly looked to go forward and moved the ball well between the lines. We just didn’t have the player who could create a bit of magic at the end of it. Regardless of where they finish in the league, prior to Saturday they’ve troubled the opposition they’d come across in their first 4 games. None of that today. Take the point and move on |

Hope he’s got the hang of these 3 game weeks, and is simply thinking ahead to the two in a row. We all know you get what you can for the first two and worry about the third when you get there.
As much as I don’t like to see us resting our best centre half (he is by some distance!) it’s probably wise given 2, out of the last 3 seasons |

If he’s still here this thread will be about Varane next year. I got pelters for saying Madson was a good player. Varane has had a tough season, but he’s a good player. Finds it easier to hit a 60 yd cross pitch ball than 10 yds, but he will come good, if here. I’ll leave it there |

With his injury issues this past 2 seasons and our current team woes, maybe they’ve simply had to ease him back to fitness so that he doesn’t break down again, and thus he’s not been able to train properly until recent weeks. The medical team not taking any chances tells me he’s still pretty fragile. I think any attitude talk is very wide of the mark. |

Noticed this right away. He doesn’t get there because he’s adjusting his feet. On my glance at the time he seems to be still backing towards his goal when the fella takes on the early strike. My main criticism at the time was did he need to be still backing off that far at that point. Closer you are to the ball the lesser the angle, and 3 yds off his line felt like excessive backing off given he’s over 25 yds out with a defender facing him up. I’ll back him all the way though. |

Everything positive from the middle came through him. Continually takes the ball with his left on the half turn and plays a pass with his right, and does it with ease. An abundance of energy, too. He just needs to not force it sometimes, but I think with his recent run he’s settling more and starting to do that less. He went from a player starting or always getting some game time every week last season to not making the bench this, so it’s understandable he’s keen to impress when he gets a window. He’s already had to deal with failure once…but he’s a great player and I’m glad Stephan is starting to be impressed by him and knows where to play him. His touchline instructions when putting him on against boro were essentially drop in and give the defenders an angle to get it to you. He did that then and he was great at it throughout the first half yesterday. And that ball you talk of with the outside of his boot with backspin so that it held up for mbengue was what I pay money to watch football for as much, if not more than winning, knowing the limitations of the team I chose to support. Absolutely sublime |
