Until the admittedly poor second yellow I thought Bilongo was the one bright spot. Steady, calm on the ball and capable of carrying the ball forward.

I could be wrong, but I think the three signings he made were future captain Brian Taylor, defender Peter Creamer and a decent goalscorer in Chris Jones to partner Terry Owen.

He was caretaker manager before Collins was appointed and made a few key signings. Then after the Collins and Stokoe debacle he became manager and built a decent side giving us our highest placing since relegation. I am sure credit was given to him for pulling strings behind the scenes and the effect of the caretaker period which included our first away win for about 18 months 4 0 away at Scunthorpe over Christmas in 1978.

Just going back to the Den Bosch win in 1979, we murdered them. It came at the start of the season following an incredible escape from applying for reelection in 78/9 when we won seven of the last eight games. Under player manager Doug Collins. It turned out that it was Peter Madden pulling the strings. The next season, under Collins then Bob Stokoe was a disaster, leading to the controversial reelection by one vote at the expense of Atrincham.
