Never finished rock bottom in the history of the county championship, something our friends over the hills cannot claim. Probably won’t this season with Gloucestershire looking odds on for that ‘title’ but it’s a measure of how poor Lancs have been this season. Thats what happens when cricket becomes secondary. |

The last three games of the season giving rise to optimism and excitement for the future….then Dick Connor got sacked, Reg Jenkins was released and…worst of all…Walter Joyce was appointed Manager.

Yes it was referred to as that, because we introduced it for the Coventry cup tie. At the time in the FACup if there was a clash usually both teams changed, though I am not sure it was a requirement ( eg in several cup finals, City v Leicester, Arsenal v Liverpool, United v Arsenal) only one team changed,). so Coventry wore their green and black stripes. in the fourth round we wore yellow and blue while Colchester changed to all red. But in 1971-2 season FACup ( home to Barnsley) and 1972-3 season FACup 1st round (home to Bangor) we wore our first strip (blue and white) so if ever it was a ‘Cup kit’ it was only the case for the 70-71 season. |

we wore the yellow shirt blue shorts change strip in the League Cup win at Blackburn Rovers at the start of 1972-3 season (which we followed up with a draw at Blackburn the following Saturday, against in yellow and blue).
We probably also wore it for the away wins at Southend and Tranmere that season though I wasn’t at those games. Observer reports at the time didn’t tend to have photos from away games.
Of course we didn’t use it as a change strip from 73-4 season given we had adopted the yellow and blue sash on white strip as our main strip. |

We had already gone off the boil and had slipped down the league a bit by the time Buck had his leg broken by the goalie called Death.
The turning point was Vinny Leech’s career ending injury in December at His former club….you know, the club that no longer exists, Went winless in 7 games after that. |

Yes, Denis Rofe who later played for Chelsea and Tommy Taylor who had many years at the hammers.
It was a tough introduction to tier 3 football but we adapted quickly and reached top of the division by November. |

Interesting you say 55 years…today brought back memories, bad ones, of opening day 55 years ago in the old division 3. 4-0 loss at Notts County…with a sending off ( the first time we had a man sent off on opening day IIRC) A completely woeful display with a new formation on defence that looked clueless and an attack that was toothless.
Came home thinking it must get better…and it did …marginally. Went unbeaten in first 7 home games but winless in first seven away and finished 18th.

Melling scored 5 in 3 games and then sold to Darlington, to fans bemusement…until it became clear it was to make way for Tony Buck. And what a signing he was. |

His track record is as a T20 coach in the IPL. So they appoint him as the Test Match coach.
Good luck to him. Can’t be easy working with the clowns in charge of England cricket. |

And he had a "little' brother david. Who also had a beard. All three travelled to away games on supporters club buses.
Used to drink in the robinsons pub at the top of yorkshire street. |
