African Cup of Nations thread

I wouldn't have thought it to be a complete waste of time for him.. Training with a higher standard of player, the experience of actually being part of an international squad, he also might have gone there knowing he wasn't going to play a major part (if at all), and the manager wanted him there to gain valuable experience in prep for the next one.. Bit like England do with players like bellingham now and wallcott in the past etc.. Some of the players he would have mixed with day in day out are at some top top clubs..

RefChat 'Poll' on the Barbet incident
at 14:36 17 Jan 2022

Interesting to see that within 5 mins of play restarting, a long ball was fed into Dike and Barbet fairly challenged him to win the ball, showing great professionalism in my opinion. I would have used that opportunity to launch him 3ft into the air. More power to barbet, what a pro and a quality game to boot.. that last ditch challenge was perfection.

For me its a booking, made worse for the fact the hoardings are so close.. do that at Reading away and you end up with grazes only.. He was overly pumped up.. his manager motioned to him to calm down straight after the incident..

Heading the ball to be restricted, starting this season
at 21:59 28 Jul 2021

Just to add my opinion to this topic, I'm a level 2 fa coach and my understanding of this is to try to limit the big impact headers, and as previously mentioned, the repetition of drills encouraging this.

Big impact headers meaning young players being encouraged to return goal kicks and long range freekicks by heading the ball directly back in the direction they have come from..

Just to counter this, I would argue that it is incredibly important to teach young players how to head the ball properly, ensuring good connection and confidence in the direction the ball will travel once headed. However this can be done with a short throw of the ball rather than lamping it 30 yards at them!

Add to this, young players should be taught to bring the ball down and play rather than just head it back up the field, there are instances when you do have to clear your lines though, and teaching players when to make this decision when they will have less confidence in heading... its a tough one..

Cage fighting is a completely different kettle of fish, as is any combat sport, head guards are worn in training and fighting all the way up to amateur level.. Plus in sparring no one should be looking to take each others head off..

Which is one of the main reasons Peterborough do so well producing and developing non league talent, play attacking football and make your strikers look good. Sell on values sore once you put a few goals in the back of the net..

A genuine Question
at 17:44 3 Jul 2019

Completely agree.

There were about 4 or 5 passengers in Englands team last night, the fitness level of the American team was a level above apart from Bronze (who looked class once again). By being fitter the Americans maintained a higher standard with the ball and a high press without it. England got tired, and became incredibly wasteful in possession and lost their heads and got frustrated in the end. Also the shockingly poor penalty would have knocked the wind out of them a bit too.

Still a strong showing and this will do wonders for the womens game in England, I think you'll see England win a world cup within 12 years, as long as the FA supports the uptake in participation that will come from this good tourney.

On the mental aspects of the game..

As a FA level 2 coach, I do think we have a different mentality towards winning than some other nations, and we don't do enough in this country to coach the mental aspects of the game, whether thats winning, losing, gamesmanship or game management.

The Olympics comparison is difficult for me as football is a team game and a lot of those medals are won as individuals. A talented, self motivated and determined individual will rise to the top, with a team, you have to have the majority (if not all) of the collective all pulling in the same direction with a high level of talent and determination to succeed.

Out of all the players on that list the ones I'd be giving a contract to would be Neds and Robinson..

Furlong.

I met Furlong away from football about a month ago, top bloke, absolutely loves the club, says there is a real sense of excitement in the squad with all the young talent coming through.. I personally thought he had a tough time earlier in the season but since coming back into the side has been immense, especially in the air. We need to stick by him through thick and thin as he should be our right back for the next 5 years at least.

I can see the only compromise they would possibly make being to stop the importation of foreign firearms, the only reason they'd do that is to protect the interests of the US manufacturers like Smith & Wesson and make it appear that they are doing something 'positive'.

Can you imagine having no centralised database?!?! So much so that the gov passed a law saying it was in fact illegal to have a computerised and searchable database of gun owners.. It is complete and utter madness..

Sergio Ramos - 24!!
at 12:37 4 Dec 2017

I think he's one of the best in the world, one the best I've ever seen. Totally committed to winning, and a lot of those yellow cards were for fouls where he's taking one for the team. Apart from the fouls on Messi, he obviously doesn't like him so just kicks him into row A at every opportunity.. Which is understandable.

FFP decision in - not good (n/t)
at 15:52 24 Oct 2017

Second that,

Where does the money go? Does it get distributed to the other clubs in that division at the time?

Where has the amount come from? Is it a loss of earnings or something? Or just plucked out of thin air?

Their Second Goal.
at 18:24 13 Sep 2017

What was obvious to everyone apart from our players was that in the conditions last night, rainy and super slippery, any shot drilled along the surface is going to require a very good save to stop it going in. So when their player found himself in acres of space in the box with the ball at his feet, he did the simple things well, make sure its on target, hard and low. Smithies will be angry with himself as he holds himself to very high standards.

On the other hand, their keeper was pony, numerous times we had the opportunity to drill it in and yet no one seemed to think it was a good idea until Mass scored.

I love Freeman, think he's been a revelation since his arrival, but a freekick, dying seconds of the game, edge of the box with a very small chance to get the ball up and over their neanderthal wall and in the back of the net, should have been told.. Lay it across for someone to smash it at goal. Take your pick, Mass, Wzolek, Scowen, Robinson, Freeman himself, any you would fancy smashing it in from the edge. Add to that deflections, and floodlights/rain in the keepers eyes, could have won us the game.

Some of the stupid decisions he makes on the field, you wouldn't be surprised if he has some 'friends' in asian betting syndicates..

At times he's just fishing for a yellow card...

I'll get my coat..

Why Brentford ditched their academy in favour of developing PL outcasts
at 19:22 5 Apr 2017

EEEP is a load of bollox as many have stated. Just like the Premier League itself, EEEP only favors the elite clubs. All well and good Swansea having some 'success' with their academy, but they have no competition out there in middle of nowhere.. Try telling that to smaller clubs within 200 miles of an elite club, because they will no doubt have their best players taken for nothing. Especially London, the biggest catchment area, let alone the london sides + Watford.. Southampton, Man Utd, Man City, Norwich, Reading and Celtic all have a presence too..

I coach at a sunday league youth club in west london and we've had 55 kids signed to pro clubs in the last 4 and half years, and take it from me, its never the kids, its some parents who get greedy very quickly, the development of the kid is a minor concern. The smaller clubs have a tougher job attracting the younger kid (parents) has options, but 'route to first team' is an important factor and should be highlighted better by so many clubs.

Don't worry, QPR signed a young kid of ours a couple seasons back at the age of 9, and he is pure class, ran rings around kids two age groups above..

Oh and Sir Les isn't evil (sorry those of you who hate him).. He and Ramsey were bang involved with everything, even when we brought a team of tots over like our u7s and u8s..
