Pitch to be relaid - work starts tonight! on 13:06 - Feb 10 by DaleiLama | According to NBLG, there will be a "Full Monty" new pitch in the summer which will be done properly and (if memory serves) he stated might last 5 or even 7 years tops. If you are still reading NBLG, are you prepared to back up any of your various claims to authenticate them. Everything you have said so far seems to have come to pass, so it would seem your source of information is reliable? |
It was the club that said there would be a new pitch, I’m told it won’t be and will merely be a ‘halfway house’ between an actual proper new pitch and the type of closed season work that normally (but didn’t in summer 2017) take place. A ‘real’ new pitch would last 15 years at least but only if normal end of season works are carried out properly, which currently hasn’t been every summer. [Post edited 10 Feb 2018 23:03]

Does anyone else feel like this is a bizarre game of snakes and ladders. Might have known it was too good to be true that the job would be done "properly" once and for all. Deja vu.

But how can it be a permanent and fully satisfactory replacement with only a week between games? We have no choice but to do both

I agree a temporary one is the only choice now, but I was hoping for something that wouldn't put us back in this position anytime soon. Reading NBLG's post, it appears it's just going to get a fancy feed and weed in the summer, but I am not a pitch expert as declared previously. Anyway, the proof of the pudding and all that .........

Pitch to be relaid - work starts tonight! on 12:53 - Feb 10 by Daley_Lama | I’m not saying the drains are knackered. I would challenge that the newly laid pitch drained fine however, the Port Vale postponement was testament to that being incorrect. It rained a little bit that day and i mean a little bit, game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. Think we had played 1 or 2 games on it by then. |
The Port Vale game was postponed because it suited the football side of the club, rather than the pitch bring unplayable. If the manager had wanted that game to go ahead the ground staff could have got the pitch playable.

Absolutely. It would help a great deal if the Club would confirm whether the planned installation of a fibresand pitch is still to go ahead in the summer and the pitch to be laid this week is merely a stopgap, which they can afford to do thanks to the Cup/TV money. Please tell us!

It strikes me, as a complete layman, there are 3 issues. The air is getting warmer and wetter. We all know moisture comes off the Atlantic and a lot of it falls when it hits the pennines. So we need to put down a really good properly drained pitch in the summer. We then need to employ the right people to look after it correctly so it remains an asset and not a liability. Finally, when we get extreme weather events like we will do increasingly as the weather gets weirder, we need adequate protection for the pitch against all but the most extreme weather. None of this will come cheap I acknowledge, but you also get what you pay for. The flip side we have seen is laying emergency pitches and the risk of losing them - money down the drain instead of water. We are trying to build a club with a reputation for good football and attract young uns to flourish here and go on to make us some dosh. We have to give KH the tools to do that and back him. Sometimes it is necessary to speculate to accumulate. As we have seen this season, there are already enough obstacles to success without creating our own. [Post edited 11 Feb 2018 9:10]

Pitch to be relaid - work starts tonight! on 09:20 - Feb 11 with 4388 views | KenBoon | Historically the enemy of the Spotland pitch has been the cold and not water. Games that were rained off were usually due to downpours that any pitch would suffer. I always thought our current issues ultimately arose through too much sand being used during the summer '16 work and then not bothering to treat last season's replacement pitch as a temporary solution. I'm personally not interested in a blame game. We just need this year's midseason change to be done better than last and it to be ripped up in May. Good luck to everyone working on it this week.

A quick fix for next Sunday and hopefully the rest of the season is fine but we need to get it sorted for long-term over the Summer.

I really do think we need to get the best groundsman we can, if we are historically going to suffer from the rain we have then we need who've got proven experience, be that Oli or AN Other.

That happened to me too! Some jobsworth apprehended me as I tried to walk in the same gate. No explanation, Just a "you can't come in." I presume it's Health and safety what with tractors and things roaming about and it was going dark. Or is there something in there they don't want us to see? If so, it's a policy change from yesterday when I was able to wander in and look at the pitch which, was completely unplayable on the Willbutts side, but the drill and fill area had held up remarkably well with just a few small puddles on it.
