...sad to say Notre Dame Cathedral is burning in what looks like a very serious fire.

Beautiful historical building, the live scenes are awful.

That spire isn’t going to survive that, about 800 years of history going up in smoke.

Lots of scaffolding around there so possibly connected to the renovation works.

Awful shame, lovely building.

remember on my last 'tourist' trip to Paris, going into Notre Dame one evening past sunset, listening to the choir and main bell.

I'm not a spiritual person, but my word it made you feel different about things.
Terrible terrible shame, and i doubt it will survive the night.

850 years of history gone, just a joke to some.

I doubt it will ever be restored, yet 1 Billion can be spent on a football stadium that may not last 100 years

I expect it will be restored, almost every inch of it is likely tube recorded and I imagine the French govt will throw money at it.

But it'll cost a fortune, might take decades - and it'll still only be a replica.

It's not the first time there's been a serious fire there. Aside from that there have been numerous changes to the interior over hundreds of years. I also remember reading that the insides had been virtually destroyed during the French Revolution. It'll be restored and very well. Fortunately many of the artifacts were saved.

That is a terrible shame.

Those old buildings they have all over France...my God it's a breath-takingly beautiful country. They have mountains, proper forests, beaches with warm sea or surf and all the old chateau's and what not. Must be the world's most beautiful country? Fantastic, fresh food everywhere. Pretty French girls. People seem to like nice dogs in France as well. Really is a beautiful place. Perfect climate imo. And j'adore le Tour.

A real pity. Hopefully they'll be able to rebuild it. It's always been the structure I use to navigate round Paris. I love walking past it.

Plumbers or welders . Very rare they set fire to things. Especially working in a building like that. You'd think they would be tighter on their risk assessment and methods..?.But accidents happen i guess.

I worked over there 30 years ago and H&S was pretty strict back then on sites, can't imagine it being less so today so this is strange.

The restoration was mostly on the stonework so unlikely to be using things that cause fires and it went up like a tinderbox, very intense . will be interesting to see what they blame it on.
