| your favourite country/island. on 16:28 - Apr 27 by RangersDave | oh mate, tell me about it. The owner of the company tried turning the screws on me further and offered me a tax avoidance deal, and by doing so i might get my tools back. I reported him to the Chinese authorities but they didnt want to know. UK authorities didnt want to know, in fact there was no help from anyone. I could sue them but the Chinese courts would cost me a bond up front of the amount i was claiming back, and if i lost, i'd lose the bond. So in essence, i lost my house, my tools, 40k cash i borrowed from Funding Circle, £100,000 in cash profit from a deal with the chinese through a customer of mine, etc etc etc. So now i'm homeless, broke, getting broker, and have been thoroughly depressed. I made the equivalent of almost 1/2 a million in cash and tools and basically had them all 'stolen' from me. Please note i'm using this language primarily because i'm not naming the company concerned who are still in existance, and merely to show my experiences and thoughts on the Chinese, and their ethics and principles which, in my book, stink! |
A friend of mine who made Hand Made Greetings Cards in the UK decided he would get some mass produced in China. He has won loads of awards for his designs however they are not cheap cards. His cards are really innovative and he use all sorts of weird stuff in their design. He is famous for using pipe cleaners. Anyway he designed these card which were basically Santa Claus face with fluffy beard/moustache, fluffy eyebrows made from a fluffy material and a bright red nose The hat was made from felt as were the shoulders of his cloak . So there you have nearly all facial features apart from the eyes which were to be placed below the eyebrows as eyes are usually situated. So 2000 cards pitch up in the UK and guess where they put the eyes...yes each end of the moustache like a hammerhead shark. When he complained he was told that As Chinese people do not celebrate Christmas and therefore unfamiliar with Santa then this is why the mistake was made. No refund of money or apology from a company who have been mass producing Christmas products for yonks Buzzstards!!

Absolutely amazing place, loved every minute of it. We went for 8 days, had a car for 5 days and drove basically the Golden Circle, which you can do as a day trip from Reyjkavik but spreading it over more tiime, and having our own car meant we could go to other places, stop off in little towns and in other places of interest, and just generally take our time over it more. 2 nights in Grindavik - tiny fishing town on the south coast. Lovely place. 2 nights in Geysir - absolutely nothing there other than the geyser and the Gullfoss waterfall a mile down the road (incredible falls) but the hotel was possibly the poshest I've ever stayed at - it had a massive conservatory which housed the restaurant and a giant fk off telescope in it. Being in the middle of nowhere, it was in a complete dark sky overnight. I'm sure the aurora there would be incredible, but sadly we were there in spring where there's not loads of night, and most days were cloudy. Thingvellir - most incredible place I have ever been to. Breathtaking. We had one night in a tiny village called Laugarvatn (I think) - it was by a giant lake and in some respects looked straight out of the set of a horror film. We went to the outdoor swimming pool there, where all the locals went every day for sport/hot tub time. Then I loved Reyjkavik, very different to the sticks, but just such a cool place. We went to a public pool there too, a cool place where locals and tourists mixed together in the heated pools. The Blue Lagoon is worth the experience, but the community pools were also cool. Really, really want to go back. Was thinking of it for my wife's 30th birthday this year but then Covid happened so will put it off for now, with the costs involved I don't want to risk booking anything and losing it, even though it isn't until October. I'd love to do a road trip of the whole ring road of the country. One for the bucket list perhaps! I know people always go on about how expensive it is, and it sort of is, but it was actually not as bad as I feared. Possibly helped because neither of us drink alcohol, which is dead expensive, but we had good meals every night that topped out at £30 for 2 (except for Geysir, where the hotel was the only place to eat and that added to the cost, worked out at £50 per night for 2, but the food was AMAZING. And we had breakfast included in our tarriff) Lunches we just did from supermarkets which were pretty reasonable. We did get hamburgers from a petrol station from our one night in Laugarvatn (when there was literally nowhere else to go) which cost about £1.50 each and boy did you notice that... But yeah. I loved the place. One place I've been to that I miss above all others.

No, we didn't go anywhere near that far north, we were very much just the south west corner (which on a map doesn't look that big, but I did drive 300 miles in those 5 days!)
| your favourite country/island. on 17:41 - Apr 29 with 484 views | RangersDave | Oh i think Iceland is great. Been twice, once in early spring, once very early in January. Stayed at Geysir and thought it fantastic especially in the snow. The other place i stayed was the hotel Ranga. probably the best out there. Geo thermal hot tubs on the room verandas, bloody expensive food, and about 2 1/2 hours from Rekjavic. They have a sheet you sign at reception for you to be woken if an Aurora is about which is cool, and at night all lights are out, which gives unparalleled views of the stars. Blue Lagoon is a must, whale watching from Rekjavik was great, geysir quite thrilling, the crashed dakota on the beach quite spooky, Gulfoss was stunning, and Hard Rock Rekjavik was great with normal food and beer prices. I'd definitely go again, thats for sure. | |
