Favourite country - too many, but possibly Denmark, spent quarter of my career their, kids were born there and it is basically a great place to live. Close second would be Slovenia. Just so much in one small country, adriatic coast and italian food. Alps, lakes, mountains, forests, beaches. Pretty capital and easily accessible. It is the place I always go if I need to chill and just sit back and watch the world go by. Love Hong Kong too, amazing food, great people and city that literally never stops. Singapore is great as well, but doesnt quite have the insanity and buzz of HK, sort of a sensible grown up version. In the UK, love the West Country, family used to visit Dorset, Devon and Cornwall every year when I was young and always remember beautiful places (with awful traffic). |
I love the West Country. Dorset a particular favourite

Lived in Caribbean, E Africa, Saudia Arabia and despite what folk might think, it was very hard going at times. But my my happiest times have been with my family and I guess 3 years in Kiribati was something special. Good size house on the beach with big garden, lots of trees and a fabulous playground for my young pre-school boys. Friday evening was playing football on pitch opposite my house, then on to the beach afterwards with friends to watch the sun go down with many chilled beers. Social gatherings of one sort or another Saturday night then up at pre-dawn to listen to Engllish footballon World service then into speedboat for a morning's fishing for tuna, kingfish etc. Windsurfing in pm ...I could go on. What a delightful place and I got the opportunity to visit most groups of islands in the Pacific, including some uninhabited atolls, on a few occasions landing by ship-borne helicopter..Like msot places, the you get what you give from locals and we enjoyed the company of locals immensely. Nowadays I love spending my time in the UK, I love Hampshire and Dorset and spend most of my travels in British Isles staying on most of the Scottish islands and evene visiting St Kilda. Chile is wonderful. Spent a number of weeks travelling the length of Chile in 2011 (Patagonia - wow), and went on cricket tour there in 2014 (played 2 matches against the Chilean national team). Great memories. Indeed, I would add Chile to the list of countries I've already said. Argentina is also worthy of a mention too in fact [Post edited 25 Apr 2020 21:35]

Australia, was there for over two months, based in Sydney, one country that did match the pictures/films and to me also meet the awe level that was so expected, did have a great week in Noosa (Queensland) which I will choose as one outstanding highlight. St Lucia. As good as I hoped it might be, beaches, food, people all top notch. UK, will plump for Devon, some great places where you can be lively or serene, as the mood fits.

Mate if you go grape picking be warned It's bloody hard work, I done it as a squadie back in West Germany on the River Mosel for a week, (1969) the valley was bloody steep and you wear a huge bucket thing on your back as you slowly walk up the hill, the grape squashing was a laugh but by the early evening we were all pissed as you drink wine all day so all I remember is/was the Germans being great hosts and very hospitable (and professional piss artists).

Shame about the cloud as the views up there on a clear day are quite stunning, a few people have died climbing it, Ballina is a bit of a dump, Westport so much better.

I’ve actually liked most places I’ve been to, but a couple of out of the way places that haven’t had a mention yet are Transylvania in Romania and Shikoku in Japan. The place I’d most like to visit is Georgia (the country not the state), but the place I keep going back to is Ireland. Actually a strangely wonderful island I went to is Terschelling, which is a Friesian island. The south side of the island is spick and span Dutch, the north side a continuous sand dune beach for about 12 miles. There’s a bizarrely remote bar/diner at the far east end. We went there for a wedding that was called off the week before. I listened to the Cardiff play off on a crackling car radio. [Post edited 26 Apr 2020 0:35]

| your favourite country/island. on 19:54 - Apr 25 by francisbowles | Nice to hear you say that about Wexford. Both of my parents were born in Wexford Town in the 30s. Came to London in the 50s. They then went back to Rosslare in 1989. Both dead now. I spent many a holiday with my grandmother when I was a kid and visiting my parents later. I was in Wexford as a five year old in July 1963 when JFK visited. Had a great view from the upstairs window of my grandmothers, who lived on Crescent Quay. Still got plenty of cousins there. |
Most of the time FB we go on holidays to meet people more so than exotic locations and generally that's a good rule to follow, most places have a warmer climate than ours so that's so not hard to get past the kids atm! To my shame I've not been back to Wexford as some of the people I met reciprocated and came to Orkney on a return, great people and I'm determined to do something about that this month (definitely a lockdown thing). I went there as a group of Orkney fishermen and for whatever reason we were met with good humour by everyone, lovely experience Edit. Reconnecting of course 😠[Post edited 26 Apr 2020 2:04]

Nick My brother got to go to St Kilda, luckily from the Northern Lighthouse boat and bizarrely as he signed the visitors book the person before him was the sister of a classmate of his in the Isle of Man, he managed to catch up with them but that was a strange meeting of the British Isles😠
| your favourite country/island. on 05:08 - Apr 26 with 1193 views | timcocking | My Dad was born in St Ives. It's spectacular alright, no doubt about that. Years back it was known colloquially as Cocking town. There's a place called Cocking Court and a lifeboat named after my family, not to mention a few Cockings on the war memorial. Cornwall was a bleddy brilliant place to grow up. Completely safe and beautiful everywhere. Loved it, feel very blessed to have spent my childhood in such a lovely place. Amazing Thailand. | | | |

Great little island, wonderful people, great culture, cricket mad Also enjoyed visiting Mauritius and Bali. Place I vowed I would never return to is the US. OK my experience there was a holiday in Florida 20 years back but if that is a sample of the country as a whole, no thanks

| your favourite country/island. on 10:52 - Apr 26 with 1018 views | PlanetHonneywood | I’m currently living in my eighth country and during my time, I’ve rocked up at LHR four times with a round -the-world ticket in my paws and I’ve done a lot more besides. I find it difficult to identify a favourite place, because I’ve enjoyed so many. I’ve loved all of Central and South America and having been all over Australasia, I consider south east Asia to be home territory. And while I’ve a clutch of places that are favoured, there’s one place I’ve really warmed to over the last few years: the UK! Maybe returning as a ‘tourist’ I see it differently. But on my returns, Mrs PH and I have gone all over and had great views, times, food, drink and stayed in exceptionally good places. All of which I cannot recommend highly enough. Last year we did a walking holiday in Cornwall. Ridiculously friendly along the way, and I’m ashamed to say, this was my first proper visit to Cornwall. How I let this happen is disgraceful and in my view and experience, there are parts of the UK that are every bit as good as anywhere in the world. Many moons ago prior to my first big travel, a Kiwi colleague asked: ‘do you think you’ve seen enough of your own country first?’ Him and his missus had spent five years travelling Godsown before leaving. Ironically some 15 years later in a bar in Auckland, I replied I hadn’t and that I must do something about it when I got back! I’m delighted that despite continuing to spend time outside the UK, I have gone out to see more of the UK over the last 20 years and I look forward to seeing more as well. Weather can be crap though... [Post edited 27 Apr 2020 4:46]

Going to places for work gives you a different and usually unfavourable view of a place that you have to fight. I’ve been to Thailand three times, but for a total of about seven days and never set foot out of Bangkok - barely set foot out of the car as I was in traffic so much of the time. I’m sure I’ll go back some time to take a proper look. The one place I won’t is China, didn’t enjoy my times there at all.
