Mini 850

A chap with a back street garage at Hurstead used to buy ex-military vehicles and do em up to look like regular motors. Mine was done like a black mini mayfair - had a big steering wheel and round wing mirrors either side of the bonnet.

I suspect there won't be another of these on this thread?

Actually handed down from Grandad to mum, and was the first car I drove when I passed my test, although was only the named driver and not the owner.

Spent a fair time self-powered on 2 wheels, then on a Vespa 125, before deciding 4 wheels was safer and bought

I think mine was a GLX and it might even have had an i on the model but was deffo black. Then I wrapped it round a tree and decided company cars were much more cost-effective and lucky to still be in one 30 years later.

"wrapped it around a tree"

Talking of which, maybe we could include accidents/collisions in this thread?

Before there were traffic lights at the top of Queen's Park Road in Heywood, i was driving along Bury & Rochdale Old Road towards Fairfield, doing about 35mph when a driver accelerated from the top of the steep incline straight into the side of me. Had a Sierra at the time, and it was a write off, but got the claim in full

For me it was a green 1959 Ford Popular. 2 doors, 3 forward gears, and 0 to 60 in about 2 days.

850 mini as well, it had a wooden dash and steering wheel and you had to be above 65 or below 50 as it developed a shake that was awful. I managed to smash the front end up right outside the Gale on whitworth rd after skidding, the guys I hit had next to no damage and were both Dale fans (in a Renault I think) and did not bother with insurance, they probably read this!

Used to be a funny little garage in an industrial estate off Oldham rd that specialised in minis and metros, used to take my car there, it generally cost me money and came back no different or worse, but he was cheap!

Not my first car, but I had a Renault 10 with the rear engine. 1300 I seem to remember . Full of rust and leaked like a sieve when it rained. The front end was so light it was impossible to steer in the snow .

Ours didn't leak, but the wings had plenty of filler in them, which I got the job of sanding down by hand and spraying. Never drove it in the snow, but remember driving across the M62 in driving rain, gale force winds, surrounded by wall-to-wall trucks with my suitcases on a roof rack going to Uni. First long m-way journey and I was glad of all the luggage to weigh the car down!

Mine had incredibly thin tyres, like those on a 2cv, the leak was through the bulkhead, the whole thing was held together by bodged welding in the end.

First car was about 1983. A white Beetle. Great car, noisy as a tank. Didn't have it too long but by the time it went to the scrap yard I was running it with the battery (under the back seat!) supported by 2 pieces of wood spanning a rusty hole in the floor. Eventually the heater was permanently on so for one summer I had to drive with all the windows down so I didn't pass out!

Think my main bump(several bits of ones in my younger days) was near the bottom of Whitworth Rd when my Audi 80 (always been a dream to own an Audi) which I had had for about 3 months was ploughed from behind by a lovely lady in a big Merc who claimed that her foot had slipped off the brake and realised that she couldn't stop so in her words" I didn't try ".I was hit that hard that the driver's seat sheared off level with me bum and I finished sat on backseat with half a front seat with me.
When repaired (£6500) told that it would be stronger than when brand new ,so have always remembered to enquire with any second hand car as to whether it has had a huge shunt up the rear

True, but it was amazing how much you could fit under the bonnet.

I had one too in 1973 but couldn't get the hang of double de-clutching - no synchromesh gears. Soon got rid for a Ford Corsair, which turned out to have a dodgy starter motor

First car I bought for myself, having had use of company vehicles previously, VW Polo. Not-so-Solid German build quality evidenced by the gear box killing itself a couple of days into a new job and almost an entire month from pay day leaving me skint and on the train until I fixed it. After that the pedal box collapsed and I blocked the A6 at rush hour with no way of using my clutch. Even when they weren’t broken the pedals were awful to use. Too small for me with size 10 feet and a plastic lip between the steering column and the pedals that I’d constantly catch my toes on. Thankfully my one and only money pit of a car so far.

Lancia Beta 2000 Coupe. RWL249T. Absolute rust bucket with electrics like a back street abortion . Headlights came on instead of brake lights, hazards instead of indicators and I had to stall it to shut the engine off.
God I loved that car!! Went like the clappers!

A 1988 Mitsubishi Lancer. I was its second owner in 1993. A very reliable car with great bit of poke. Really regret scrapping it in 1998 under the Irish government scheme incentivising purchase of brand new cars.
