Iran kicked out of the World Cup over the treatment of women in their country, luckily the World Cup is being held in a forward thinking expressive country.

That's an interesting perspective and inspires me to learn more!

If you mean that, thank you.

I have Iranian family so have a particular interest. What I said in my previous posts are just my opinions, I can't claim to be an authority on the subject. If you spoke to my family they'd have their own views and likewise any other Iranian.

We all agree the treatment of women is wrong, but what the future holds for the country is open for discussion. Like with all these issues it's about talking to people, hearing different views and then making up your own mind.

Anyway, there's a lot wrong with the world at the moment, but the R's are doing well and for all of us on here we can enjoy that together.

Iran’s a strange country. There’s a perception from the outside world of the subjugation of the women that ignores the fact that it’s women enforcing it. Completely denying them agency over their actions.

Yes, it is ironic that there are calls for Iran to be banned from the World Cup, but it speaks of the power and divid within the country that the expat community has such influence whilst there’s another class of Iranians desperately coming over on boats.

"There’s a perception from the outside world of the subjugation of the women that ignores the fact that it’s women enforcing it."

Wrong! Some women are enforcing it. In the company of some men.

Meanwhile the rest of the women and men are forced to endure it.

If you read this thread back he seems to know a fair bit more about it than you or I, so your tone is a bit daft at best.

Just today I was listening on the radio to a female Iranian exile, who was recounting how when the Shah was in power, she and her fellow Left Wing Liberals joined with the religious fundamentalists to drive out the Shah.
Within days of the return of the Ayatollah, the fundamentalists had turned on their erstwhile allies and began treating them worse than the Shah ever did.
Oh and for several years, my neighbour in the flat upstairs was a (Christian) Iranian woman, as it happens married to a Scotsman.
She had many interesting tales* to tell.

Graham Thorpe became their Head Coach earlier this March, though he fell seriously ill in May, so I think may no longer be in post?

Look that's all great and quite well informed as I find a lot of your stuff, but the bloke has family there.

I find a lot of our collective views in this country are based on erudite outside opinions that we too often give too much weight to. I haven't described that properly I don't think so may try again tomorrow.

I’m not saying it’s entirely women’s fault, but having looked deeper into the issue than most I know it’s a more complicated picture than is painted in the west.

It’s a fact that there are women driven by religious conviction who enforce the modesty laws. I’m saying you can’t deny these people agency over their action. I also believe the main issue in Iran is the divid between the urban and rural, not men vs women.

Iran is a deeply religious country. Progressives tend to look at one aspect of society and take that at face value. Yes, people are outraged by the treatment of women, but that is compounded by the effects of years of sanctions.

I don’t think the issue here is the dynamics of power, in my opinion it’s about a country that has had its development stifled resulting in a deep divid within the society that has expressed itself in religious fundamentalism. To understand and get to the root of that will prevent the country lurching into another destructive revolution.

It is a fact that in every culture where women are subjugated there are women playing a key role in that oppression. Think of the women leading pro-life movements in the US (even though it is designed to take away women's agency over their own bodies) or women reading fashion magazines that reinforce sexist stereotypes, etc. All that demonstrates is that rough 50% of the stupid people on the planet are women, which is an obvious fact. It doesn't make the picture any more complicated or nuanced. The evil stupidity of the Iranian regime is just as evil and stupid whether it is supported by men, women or dogs, for that matter.
