Just to show how close Pakistan got, the margin of defeat (26 runs) was the second smallest in test history while chasing a target of 350+

What an excellent achievement. It was good to see different players step up when needed and goes to show how important pace can be on any surface. I would be tempted to give Ahmed his debut in the next test, especially if it is expected to turn.

Aussies going well too, battering the Windies in both of their games earlier this month (not that it takes much mind) and comfortably beating SA in the first test over the weekend on what was a ridiculously green pitch.

Things are certainly building up nicely, and regardless of where we're at in the World Test Championship, i've little doubt the Ashes will be fought by the two top teams in world cricket

New Zealand will be a good test. Similar conditions to England so maybe more of a test for the top order. It will be interesting to see if Duckett can cement an opening berth and whether Bairstow is fit. Broad will likely be back in the squad which offers good options in seamer friendly conditions. We might actually be getting competition for places. If Bairstow is fit does he keep? Not sure he should replace Brook. It would be nice if Archer and Wood were fit enough to play a part in the Ashes. Hopefully it will be an exciting cricketing summer. | | | |

The Bairstow conundrum will be a good test of the McCullum/Stokes selection policy, which has led a bit of a charmed life so far, not without good reason
McCullum has already indicated Bairstow comes straight back in, but it'd be insane to even consider leaving Brook out. On the other hand, Foakes is the best keeper and that can win a match (or certainly lose it) whilst his batting is pretty decent, adding some calm to the lower middle order
A real selection headache, but that's a positive. We'll probably play four seamers plus Leach in NZ conditions, with Broad (the original but unused Nighthawk) replacing Ahmed
If pushed, i'd be inclined to make Bairstow wait. Brook is the future, but it's happening now | |

The way England are playing test cricket since last Summer is thrilling, edge of your seat viewing. Be interesting to see how New Zealand respond in the next tests on their meadow, but the only other team who I think could give us a challenge and fight fire with fire in our current combative style is Australia.

The last test NZ played in Pakistan resulted in a loss by an innings and 324 runs. Hoping we can at least compete this time. Will depend on Patel, who lacks experience, and Sodhi, who lacks consistency, IMHO. |  | | |
