On falling out of love with QPR (and pro football) 00:01 - Dec 10 with 8065 viewsstainrods_elbow

Anyone experienced/experiencing this?

What/who did you blame (if anyone)?

How did you handle it?

Did you falll back in?

Is it me getting older and emptier, or am I deluded that the game's just not what was, we fans are an irrelevance/encumbrance (Hillsborough, Paris, Qatar - though some of whom are also tw*ts, which doens't help)?

Answers to my therapist!

I also think the hooligan thing was overblown. Certainly it was an issue when I started going regularly in the 80s but it was pretty easy to avoid getting caught up in anything unless you were looking for it. It was also worse with specific clubs such as Leeds, Millwall, Chelsea etc. To me it added an edge to the atmosphere that I quite liked, not that I would ever go near any fighting.

Homophobia? Yes it was certainly around and not just in football, but society in general. It was the go to insult in schools etc to call someone gay or a poofter. As already mentioned on here Elton John used to get pelters about it, but I do think this was more about his attempt to hide it than the fact itself. Also anti semetism was rife during games with Spurs, hissing noises etc. Racism not so much, possibly because QPR has always been based in a multicultural area. More of an issue with some other clubs for sure.

I think the biggest change in modern football is the loss of hope. What is the best a club like QPR can hope to achieve now? Premiership survival for a few years maybe? Look at Brentford, about as well run as its possible to be but this is as good as its ever likely to get for them. Its really not that exciting hanging around the middle or bottom half of the prem never being able to get near the top clubs and their billions. If this is living the dream, then sorry it doesn't do a lot for me.

I've never felt more like giving it up than now. Didn't renew my ST this season because of the fiasco of losing Warbs, after the late-season collapse. Plus I can't see the action at the school end of the pitch because of the stupid LED perimeter hoarding ads. Tried a game in SARd but couldn't fit my legs in the seat. Then the PBBC fiasco. Then England losing to France. After 55 years I have found myself envying people who do not invest their mental wellbeing in supporting a football team.

Perfectly valid feelings fella. Rangers need to be careful about supporters jacking it in, as there won't be many replacements. To get bums on seats again, the club firstly needs a team we can get behind and be proud of - and as you alluded...a new stadium. Can't see anything but frustration and apathy among a lot of supporters if this carries on indefinitely.

imo the "sport" just wants regional super teams, a bit like the NFL and they want fans to just watch the games, whoever plays and make it a bring your mates and watch event. pi55 off!
they do not understand we want local teams, we will travel and want to be part of it, for better or worse and we qpr fans have seen the worse many times but the game wants the prem lge and love in that it brings. when you was a kid , did you see people where you live ( assuming london) wear a psg or madrid shirt?? or even man city? now it;s commonplace .
face paints, sponge hands and that crap not part of our game or culture. yes make it welcoming and family friendly but allow some verbals, chanting and actual support. modern football is dog poo left on the footpath.

All that’s not helped with all these American phrases entering the game, talk sport are the worst.
Game day
Shut out
In transition
Turn over and lots more I can’t think of.

Sounds like half of a dull album tracklist for the latest Coldplay album.

Maybe just THIS football team, eh?

Brentfart and Foolham fans are feeling like I did all the way through my formative years and good luck to them; it is nice when your team achieves and punches above their weight for years...

Can we go out yet?

Really? That's a shame for you. It was great for us between 1982 and 1995...

Parts of it were great, a fair bit was meh. And back then you didn't have billionaire owned clubs distorting things.

Football was a hell of a lot different in those times

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore
