It’s us or Reading isn’t it? on 08:38 - Apr 12 by Toast_R
Quite possible we might have to spank a Bristol City team with nothing to play for by 6 goals on the final day. Shades of 99.
And we lost our last away game in the potteries that season too.Who can forget that tw at cupping his ear to our fans after scoring?I have as I’ve forgotten his name.

The infamous Carl Griffiths. His solitary league goal for Port Vale.
Jeez, that lineup that day at Vale Park, we were lucky to get nil... Miklosko Baraclough Darlington Breacker Linighan Plummer Peacock Kulcsar Murray Kiwomya Slade

Subs : Rowland, Gallen, Jeanne
...and the R's fan so incensed he embarked on a kamikaze run straight into the arms of the goading Vale fans in the stand to our left. It was a long time ago, and I'd had a few pints in Burslem beforehand, but if I remember correctly, did he actually dive head first into the baying mob to be immediately swallowed up in a sea of pulling and pummelling limbs? Was like a scene from a zombie movie. Leon Jeanne came on late I seem to remember. And Vale fans giving us the finger and mooning at us on our coaches on the way out.

Glad I wasn't just imagining it! I remember, on the one hand being appalled at the antics of the running fan, but also full of admiration for his sheer bloody-minded determination and bravery. He bore on his shoulders all the anger and frustration of the 4000 Rangers behind the goal that day and in a way, helped us cope with it better by offering himself up as a kind of sacrifice for us all.

IIRC, I’m pretty sure the stewards got to him before he could get to the Vale fans. Several of our lot tried to get at Griffiths and he was bloody lucky that there were enough stewards and Police to stop them. If ever a player was asking for it, it was him that day. I also remember Simon Barker, who came on as a late Sub for them, coming over to us the end, top bloke that he is. I’d like to think he chinned Griffiths afterwards. Clive has said it was like a War Zone outside afterwards, but we didn’t see or hear any of it in the car park.
I need a SAGA. What’s the SAGA? It’s ….. Queen’s Park Rangers.

No, he wasn't intercepted. Spoke to an old Rangers mate this evening who was there and he corroborates the story of a head first attack into the Valiants. (Surprised we'd never discussed this topic before, in our Rangers cups). He's a metal fan. Said the Port Vale Runner headed himself into an unfriendly "mosh pit". He was a Port Vale Runner
