Swansea City v Preston North End : Match day thread on 18:19 - Aug 17 by lifelong | Enjoyed today, much more pace about the game. Appreciated the short performance from Kyle Naughton, still a quality player. |
Yeah, Grimes was much quicker gettingthe passes off and more forward thinking. The wide players looked dangerous but we do need a dedent CAM to help create more chances. Though Preston did look quite poor at times, we did look better, quicker. Still work to do, we still need 2/3 plaers at least (of the right quality) but there could be a team in there. Naughton is just proof that players never lose their talent, it's their legs go, age catches up with everyone but experience covers some bases that the legs can't still reach.

Swansea City v Preston North End : Match day thread on 18:41 - Aug 16 by SullutaCreturned | Really good players don't need the manager to tell them to change things. Really good managers acept that a game plan may nt be working and having something different planned. Really good teams can play different styles, they can do the tiki taka or the long ball as and when. We do the same thing time after time after time. If Williams is willing to change things around and play to our strengths then who knows. We have some pace now, we have a tall forward, why don't we sometimes try putting the ball on his head. It's weird really because when Cullen was there last season he had a few chances on his head and got nowhere near. |
That would be true if we had really good players and a good manager, but we don't

There has to be some space not only for Luke Williams but for the players, a good manager, as most intelligent people, learns from their mistakes, and that’s exactly what we saw today.

Nicely summed up Keith, that’s exactly what he did - he learned from his mistakes and instigated a near faultless performance from his players. To my mind (alongside last years home Cardiff game) the best performance of Luke’s tenure. All the things I had a moan about last week were addressed and we saw a very quick short passing game that bewildered Preston especially in the second half. Grimes played more like the player people keep telling me he is and sped up the centre of midfield- Franco has a very good tempo to him and it was encouraging to see them both get forward often. So the CM pace picked up considerably and that gave our wingers front foot ball and boy did they use it well. Eom is going to be another Ronald but Ronald himself seems to be playing at 50 per cent above what he was last year and that was pretty damn good to be fair! As mentioned elsewhere our three academy players made their mark - lovely to see. The defence look for the most part untroubled but a special mention to Josh Tymon - he was absolutely fantastic. After a quiet start last season he’s carried on his late season form through to this campaign. He’s better than Bidwell in terms of pace and movement but like Bidwell he wears his heart on his sleeve - an honest and very good player - so glad we have him. If Key can reach that level we are fine at FB. Vigoroux is solid and his distribution is very good - I’m suddenly not so worried if we can’t get Rushworth (though if we can we would have an embarrassment of riches. Finally it looks like Zan is the man. That was a quality finish by a good striker and there’s a heck of a lot more to come from him mark my words. His positional play and reading of the game is very good and Ronald and Eom are both matches made in heaven for him. If we keep them all fit and the speed of our play up from CM he will get 15-20 goals this season. Great to see him off the mark so soon and I hope that he can’t start games soon as players of that ability need the minutes to atune to their team mates but great signs yesterday that it’s happening already. LW is obviously easing him in to avoid any injuries while he gains match sharpness/fitness. Great player management from LW. As for Luke himself that was the game we’d all been hoping to see from him. No more aimless tip tapping of 5 years passing but possession based football with pace, menace and intent. Quite a few players were shooting whenever they had a sight of goal and that’s another positive too. Used his subs well and couldn’t fault him at all. Very happy with the performance I hope he can keep it up. After a lot of negativity on the message boards after Boro all looks much better. Get another CB and a Paterson replacement and we are definitely top ten on yesterday’s showing. Sorry about the drivel but I had to give them all credit for a great performance. Let’s keep it going.

Swansea City v Preston North End : Match day thread on 18:49 - Aug 17 by Dr_Winston | Also worth noting how integral the apparently complete shite Jay Fulton was to the move for Vipotnik's goal, which was a fantastic flowing move. Worth saying again. Individually they're both capable of a lot more than they are when consistently played together. |
Impossible to make that call. Grimes has played virtually every minute since we were relegated. When did we last see Fulton without him? I do like Fulton, he’s just not on Grimes’ level and if we’re not playing them both, he’s on the bench. Certainly not the talentless donkey some mate out. Was slightly surprised we went with Cooper not Abdulai though.

I would have taken 3-0 all day long and yes, some positives. But at each goal, myself and other didn't get out of there seats to do anything other than just clap. I don't know if it's modern football or me but I was bored most of the time. It's certainly not front foot football but slow and labourius against a poor PNE team.

Agree, the score flattered the performance. There were some nice moments but it was far from high octane. Preston weren’t up to much and the first two goals had an element of luck to them (as in stupid handball). I said before the game though, I’d have been happy with a win regardless of how we played.

Jay Fulton was playing Premier League games for us when Grimes was still on loan at Leeds, so it's not all that difficult to make the call. I agree, he's not on Grimes' level when Grimes plays like he did yesterday. Unfortunately for the vast majority of his time here he hasn't played like that. If Grimes reverts back to his usual form then I'd have no problem with a Fulton/Franco midfield combo instead. Certainly the team wouldn't miss MG when he's in full momentum killing mode. If anything having a genuine fear of losing his place instead of being an automatic choice come what may might motivate Grimes to play more like he can do more often.

He played 19 times for us in 5 years in the premier league. Most recently 7 seasons ago when he played twice. It’s fairly difficult to make that call. I agree with your last paragraph. If Allen gets fit for any decent period, he can do what Grimes does better. If Franco establishes himself and we sign a #10 or play Eom there, then there’s a compelling argument for leaving him out. Or we could play him alongside those players and see if he thrives.

Watching a player 19 times, especially against tough opposition, is ample opportunity to get a decent grasp of their capabilities. I haven't included Allen in my considerations because who knows? Even if he's not fit Grimes should be no safer from a stint on the bench than any other player in the team. When he plays like he did yesterday then he deserves the reputation he has. When he's not playing like he did yesterday then he doesn't offer anything that other players don't and some would posit actually has a detrimental effect on the entertainment on offer. That is the point.

i suspect Luke sees Abdulai as cover on the wing ...therefore an option off the bench of fresh legs.. whi could fit into CAM or wing. Other than him we have no wide attacking option in the bench currently

I can’t take that first comment seriously. An average of four games a season between 2013 and 2018. Some from the bench. Maybe he had the odd league cup game too. Reality is you haven’t seen Fulton play without Grimes for more than the occasional game or at all since 2018. Grimes should be safer from the bench than Fulton because he’s the better player. However if we get to the stage where our best midfield combination doesn’t include him, then of course he should be dropped. I think we’re potentially closer to that this season than we have been for years.

Feels better this morning after that though we will have far greater challenges as Preston were utter garbage and thuggish, as they were last year. A stain on a great old club . It was totally different to the Boro game and the outcome proves what happens when we quit that meaningless walking football. In fairness to whoever sanctions new players,Eom ,El Generalissimo ,Larry the keeper and Zan look excellent prospects . We can and should now move on and continue this against cradiff Praise the Lord

Some people in the comments above aren’t taking into consideration that it’s only the third game (including the cup). Some lovely interplay evident in the second half especially- I can definitely sense a big improvement. With some quality additions at 10 and centre half we will be a tough team this season.

Yesterday was a relief and if it’s a portent of better days to come then great Forum comments mean nowt and are often simply fans venting spleens or looking to appear smartarses . Swansea City v Preston North End : Match day thread on 08:48 - Aug 18 by Whiterockin | I thought Cooper had an excellent game, possibly he is doing things in training and it showed on the pitch yesterday. |
I thought he had a good game with what he does which is enable other with his movement and positional sense, he not the most skillful player but how many times have we seen midfielders when we look to or have to attack push on, far, too early sitting in a line with the forwards waiting for the ball to come to them, Cooper playing on that inside left position feeds the winger, covers the fullback's forward runs ands get forward into the box in areas to at least have a goal scoring opportunity and given the tempo of our play he was still doing it in the dying minutes of the game. We had instances in the past when we had Paterson, Piroe and Ntcham playing together but it didn't work because they didn't get any service and didn't combine well defensively when needed, even last season the service to Placheta's and Tymon's runs were not seen by Paterson time and time again because as Paterson cut inside he became totally unaware of what was happening on his left. You have to have players on the pitch who are aware what is happening around them and can react to them quickly, both going forward and defensively. Both Cooper and Franco did that well yesterday along with Grimes linking up well. Last season Paterson , Platino and Grimes became the starting midfield and our performances picked up. We caused teams problems with quick balls through the middle so attacking wise better but it wasn't strong enough defensively against Leicester inexperienced young player or poor team work we fell apart, Fulton was soon restored to the midfield. Yesterday's game was won on solid team work and I think Cooper's work goes unnoticed at times. [Post edited 18 Aug 10:14]
