To be fair though, I'd challenge you to find any country whose Olympics coverage isn't a bit jingoistic and self-focussed.


I was in Ireland for most of London 2012, and the RTE coverage was an eye opener…taking you from an athletics final to see an Irish competitor coming 23rd in canoeing. The country stopped for Katie Taylor, other boxers and the rowing brothers but you’d hardly know about GB medals apart from grumbling about over-the-top coverage in the British press.

I was in the US for Barcelona 1992and the coverage of the 100m final - which Linford won - was scandalous.

No mention of the other finalists in the hour long build-up and the actual race coverage was solely on their man who finished third, and we never saw Linford and second place Fredericks cross the line.
