Should All International Managers Be Qualified For That Country 12:37 - Nov 18 with 2014 viewsSaintNick

I went on BBC Radio Solent last night and I posed the question that International football should be the last bastion in football of the Olympic Spirit.

IE all managers and coaches of a country should be qualified to do so by the current rules to represent the country, ie either born or parents of grandparents born in said country.

I have nothing against Tuchel, I will be pleased to see him do well, but International football is going the same way as Club football, the big countries can buy the best managers.

How long before you can also buy the best players by offering incentives to change nationality

This is not a racist thing, its about International football being truly that, each country putting out their best players & coaches against another country.

I would also go as far as saying that the players should only be paid minimal expenses and appointment fees

So what does everyone think

We could appoint Putin for all I care if he wins us the World Cup.

Are Russians banned from managing international teams in the same way their players are banned from competing (semi-serious question....)?

I wasnt suggesting that we should not have Tuchel merely that it should be a level playing field for everyone.

Are you saying Players should NOT be paid to play for their Country.
If so then I totally agree, it's a privilege to represent your nation & that should be sufficient reward for the players.
They should get expenses only.
But we all know that will never happen, you'd struggle to raise a team .
I remember our legend Micky Channon saying that he would have walked to Wembley across broken glass with bare feet just to play for his country.

Grim, whilst I agree with you in principle, since 2007 the England players have donated their match fees and decent parts of of their tournament prize money to charity so I would say carry on paying them strictly on condition that they continue to donate their fees to charity. £5m donated and counting allegedly…

This from Google:

England players have donated their appearance fees to charity since 2007 through the England Footballers Foundation. The money is given to various charities, including Cancer Research UK, UNICEF, and Help for Heroes. This initiative has raised over £5 million for good causes.

What they donate: Players donate their match fees, which are understood to be around £2,000 per game. In addition to their match fees, they have also donated chunks of their tournament prize money to charity, such as NHS Charities Together after the Euro 2020 tournament.

How it works: The England Footballers Foundation, set up in 2007, is the vehicle through which the players make these donations.

Why they do it: The players choose to donate their appearance fees because they believe it's the right thing to do and that being paid to represent their country is not necessary.

Impact: The foundation has distributed over £5 million to a wide range of charities since its inception.

Good post.
I was unaware that currently the players donate their match fees to charity.
If that is the case, long may it continue.

I remember watching Jack Charlton jumping up and down after Ireland had beaten us at the Euros in 1988.
He won the World Cup as an England player but loved the fact he’d beaten his home country.
I think as a manager it’s a job and a privilege to represent that country.
As a player it’s also a privilege but a duty as well.
Most managers are ex player’s or have no real playing side of note to their careers.
Whereas a player plays for where he was born, or Grandparents came from…
Being an international manager doesn’t mean you’re like a professional footballer, it’s a job not a career.
