Child poverty 2 child benefit cap abolished 17:08 - Nov 26 with 2912 viewsReslovenSwan1

The two child benefit cap came in under Osbourne and Cameron after the press had highlighted several family's living the good life with ,20 children and counting. Reeves does not remember this probably.

If she did remember it she would raise the 2 child cap to a 5 child cap. It is just rank bad politics. The Daily Express will already be getting reports from the 24 people sized family none of whom have ever done a day's work. It is a gift for Reform as Asians traditionally have big families too..

The definition of " child poverty" is weak also as it is a percentage 60% of the average. As far as I understand it since it is a percentage "abolish Child poverty" is a mathematical Impossibility. Idea for mathematically illiterate Socialist s like Diane Abbott.

If people want to call me out I will point out that I probably was raised in child poverty in real terms not percentages due to going without and having to graft on a very rudimentary farm in Carmarthenshire where gard physical work was required. It gave me a work ethic and ambition. It was dirty cold and not very comfortable..

Your are right about the 60%.

There are 2 definitions of child poverty in the U.K. but a number of other bodies and organisations use ther measures such as ‘deep poverty”

The first official measure of child poverty is defined as “Relative Poverty” which is having a household income below 60% of the national median. Given that the median income is the halfway point, we’re always going to be in a position where half the population gets more than the median figure while the other half gets less. The current medium household income including benefits is £41k per year, so in effect the 60% figure is £24,600pa.

This second measure is “absolute poverty” where the threshold is fixed at 60% of the 2010/11 median income adjusted for inflation. In the 2023/24 financial year, the absolute poverty line is considered to be 60% of the median income in the 2010/11 base year, adjusted for inflation. The corresponding income level after housing costs was approximately £299 per week or £15.5k per annum.

There are a millions in relative poverty and according to the IFS around 520,000 in absolute poverty. Maybe we need to get rid of the relative poverty figure because using that measure it’ll never be eradicated and go for a more meaningful actual figure .

Whilst my daughter who would love more kids but realises it would be too expensive continues to go to work & pay for them.

There are exceptions but its quite demoralizing to tax payers.

Another reward for those on benefits getting a tax free handout paid for by those working.

Strange how state pension is classed as a benefit is taxed at earned income at 20%, while all other benefits are paid tax free even if you get benefits of £20,000 pa.

No wonder people on benefits refuse to work.

Poverty is now utterly misused a word
They are not in poverty
They are financially worse than most and often that’s because of them

It’s emotive and why it’s a political football

Working people us the worst though

There are many out there that have extra kids just to get more income and they’ll now continue to do so.

What is certain is that the people who do so will now still be able to fund full Sky package, drugs / tobacco / drink, tattoos etc. but in greater quantities. I’ve seen this too many times first hand.

Exactly in a lot of cases it's not lifting kids out of poverty but lining the pockets of feckless parents

I worked with a guy years ago who had 5 kids by the time he was 22. He gave up work because he could earn more money not working and has been living in a massive 6 bedroom house up in sketty somewhere.

My partner is a full time carer for her mother who has had three heart attacks in the last five years. It’s a 24 hour 7 day a week job. Her mum has got mental issues that often means she’s up and wanting food cooked and cups of coffee at 3/4 in the morning.

£80 a week she gets for that.

Yet you read about other people getting paid 3/4k a month for doing absolutely f all the whole system needs tearing up and starting again.

So many pills you can hear her rattling when she walks down the stairs.

My missus is very intelligent got a good degree had to give up her job to go back live with her mum, how the hell they expect her to live on £4k a year is beyond me, especially since she’s paying for two. She had to sit on the phone and be interrogated for over an hour the other day by the benefits office about all the outgoings on her account. “Why did you withdraw £10 on such and such a date” going all the way back to July.

It stinks.

We'd been married 10 yrs before our eldest was born, life was a struggle after we got married with a mortgage around our necks, like most people at the time money was tighter than a submarine hatch with lots of pitfalls time over again I wouldn't get wed at 22 with having to chuck all we had into the mortgage and house.

It's harder again now for the youngsters and it's going to get harder with this Government.

Mrs is same with our youngest, we get respite with lad going to day centre and staff here twice a week and every other Saturday and he goes to a respite, centre she also works two days a work in a special needs school as well, Carers allowance is pathetic disgusting and shameful for the work that's involled, he's 29 now and he's been severely disabled since birth.

Seems a good way of making money no doubt about that, stats are saying 5 kids will earn you appx 90 grand a year and then the cash in hand jobs will add to that and then you have the hard working middle class paying for it all. It's a win win for many of those that are not interested in birth control.

Do you have a breakdown of those benefits? It's £17.25 per week for an extra child. An extra 3 kids would be £2600 a year
