Awful shame to hear about the death of John Virgo (I know digswell has referenced it below but I feel he deserves his own thread).

One of my favourite, if not THE favourite snooker commentators, and a great player in his day. RIP John.

RIP, will be sorely missed, can’t believe we won’t hear “Where’s the cue ball going?” again.

Yes, really shocking as he'd been commentating on the Masters recently.

That is really sad. Great player and commentator.

Yes, I met him at a golf day once. Very dry.
Some photographer had taken pictures of everyone driving off the first tee but from behind. In his speech he started by holding up the photo and said ''see this?, apparently that's me! great idea taking pictures from behind'' There was nervous laughter as the photographer was the bosses son 🤣🤣

Nice guy John.

Adapted well alongside Jim Davidson on Was it called "Big Break" the snooker quiz show they did.

i remember attending Rothmans Grand Prix at the Hexagon in Reading, and both matches finished very early.

i think John had already been knocked out, so they trotted out Mr Virgo to do an hour or so of his own inimitable trick shot routines. Was more entertaining than the snooker.

RIP John.

Very sad. He's been part of snooker's fabric longer than any other player really.

They should name something substantial at The Crucible after him, if they're staying there.

Total bummer.

He had been missing from the comms on the last couple of BBC tournaments and we were chuffed to hear him back for the masters.

Legend. Vale.

What sad news.
Only a year ago I saw him do a brilliant job hosting an event with Steve Davis & Dennis Taylor. Snooker on the telly won't be the same without his commentary, he was the best in the business when it came to being insightful & entertaining.

Hit me hard this one. Was a great player and one of the few to get on with Alex Higgins. He realised very early on that while everyone else was on his back, Higgins was actually the saviour of the sport, paving the way for the likes of Jimmy White and Ronnie O’Sullivan. As a commentator, he slipped seamlessly into the ‘Voice of Snooker’ role once ‘Whispering Ted’ had sadly departed. Was lucky enough to spend an afternoon with him 20-odd years ago and can confirm he was one of the nicest blokes you could hope to meet x
