So when are your club going to pay back the millions of pounds they stole from the tax payer?

Robbing the tax payer pales into insignificance, when you think about what we have allegedly done.

No, I didn't say that. What I said is that a member of the Boro staff takes a photo of Salt from where the training is happening, which is why Salt is filming in his direction. He doesn't walk up to Salt, he takes the photo from where the training is happening, sends it to security and asks them to deal with it. Security then leave the main building and approach Salt. As I said, this is a better explanation than yours because it is simpler (Ockham's razor). There is no need for any mystery.

There are conflicting reports about what happened after security approached Salt and other aspects of the incident, but I see no need for anything other than a simple explanation of where the filming took place or what led to Salt being approached by security.

So you're saying the member of the training staff comes right up in front of Salt and takes a photo of him and sends it to the security staff to deal with and goes back to the training session? Why wouldn't he and other members of his team confront Salt?

Using distance measure on Google maps, the security staff would most likely be at the main entrance of the Training building which is approximately 300m away.

Your theory is pure speculation and you can mention Ockham's razor as many times as you like but you are ignoring the actual facts that Middlesbrough said that Salt was spotted by someone 300m away in the training centre and also , through the Daily Mail and Sky have released erroneous information about where the team train and what sophisticated espionage equipment Salt was using.

I don't know how many times I have to repeat this, but no I'm not saying "the member of the training staff comes right up in front of Salt". Once again, I'm saying that staff member stays where he is, somewhere around the training pitch and takes the photo, which he sends to security in the main building so they can act on it. Members of the coaching staff don't confront Salt because that's not their job. They carry on with training and ask security to act.

Security may then have looked out of the window and "spotted" a figure among the trees by the gate where they've just been told he is. It matters not. I'm not aware that Boro have said anything about seeing Salt from the building. A journo from Sky said that, but he won't have been concerned much with the details, he just wants the story. You yourself say that Sky released erroneous information, so surely you can't be shocked that they got some details wrong. That journo would also have been briefed by some dimwit from the Boro media team who probably didn't have the full story either. In that game of Chinese whispers, the details will get changed. The Sky report didn't even explain about the photo, so their report is hardly a comprehensive account.

Yes, what I'm saying is speculative, but the point is it explains all the key facts in a simple way and so is likely to be true. There is no need for any mystery.

Btw, note also that the Sky report said that 1st team training was happening directly in front of the gate, not over and away to the right where you and Nick were saying it happened.

Social Media Post Cast's Doubt On Middlesbrough Version Of Spygate Event's on 00:25 - May 19 by 130yrs_and_one_Cup

Yeh, I really don’t know why there is so much fuss about all this. Its all a storm in a tea cup.

This salty chap was obviously just standing around checking out the training facilities and the local fauna and flora. There is absolutely nothing dodgy in a paid Southampton football analyst driving for 5 ½ hours and 300 miles up the country during a cold weather snap, and just happening to locate himself right next to the very football training pitches where your next opposition is specifically setting themselves up to play your local team in a couple of days time. It being such a critical end of season game with enormous financial consequences is just strange timing.

The fact that he was a young lad and probably desperate to please and easily manipulated also means that there is little chance he could have been bullied by the club management to achieve their objective. The fact that he had a functioning camera with him, and it being thrust in the very direction of the Middlesbrough team is purely coincidental

Anyone thinking that some kind of advantage could be gained is totally kidding themselves. And the thought that this may have been happening several times earlier in the season surely must be madness. The way your club just happened to climb steadily up the table after appointing the new manager has to be purely down to good management, and the fact that he achieved this with the players who underachieved with the previous managers is again purely coincidental.

Yes and the SkySport reporter also said he was spotted and gathered up his “spying equipment”

Just so you can hopefully take this in, the Sky Sports reporter wasn't actually there at the time. He is just repeating what he's been told or has heard from Boro and the Daily Mail and is making a story from it.

There are clearly holes in what Boro have said and Sky etc have reported, such as they wiped the lad’s phone one minute and later said he’d ran away and escaped into a nearby village. Explain that.

In addition I would be extremely sceptical about Boro holding a last minute and highly secret training session on ancillary pitches at the bottom of the site right next to the golf club house and car park when they could have done the session at the main training pitch at the top end of the site which is right next to the training centre and surrounded by a hedge on one side and trees on another.

Don't get me wrong I'm not denying that Salt was observed there, and that it was a stupid thing to do. What could we possibly have learned from it that we didn’t already know? Someone on Sky suggested we were spying on their penalty takers. If so what would we have learned? The penalty takers will change during a game. One player might have had a knock so is replaced by another. One player might have cramp. A player chosen to take one might lose his bottle and be replaced by someone else.Players may change which side they shoot to etc. Anything we learned will have been almost useless. That’s what p!sses me off the most

A few things:

- There are conflicting reports on the details, not the key facts. Some early reports said Boro staff wiped the phone, others said he was seen quickly deleting something as they approached (which seems a bit more likely). Either way, it's a detail that doesn't matter. Did he pick up a bag before he left? Doesn't matter.

- It's entirely possible that they were training in an unusual place. The location specified by Sky seems quite likely and is consistent with all the other information we have. No team always trains on the same pitch and it is even more likely that they would be training somewhere different that week because they might have been doing some maintenance work on the usual pitch. That week was the first post-season week, so they wouldn't have expected to be training on it. If they booked in some contractors to replace the sprinkler heads, or re-seed it or something, there would have been good reasons not to cancel that. So they just moved the training instead. They probably use a grass/artificial hybrid on that pitch and maintaining that needs specialist equipment that wouldn't be easy to re-book, as many clubs will be doing the same over the summer. They obviously haven't thought much about spying until now because even their normal 1st team pitch is easily observed.

- It's possible that you could learn a lot by spying. That's why it's banned. Penalties are one part of that. Any well coached squad will have been practicing penalties before the first leg and the whole squad would be taking some. Seeing how they prefer to take them is gold dust, particularly for those who aren't normal penalty takers. They're likely to have a favourite one that they stick to under pressure.

- The BBC report today says that "the photo" was taken by the Boro club photographer. That makes sense. He would have been taking shots of the training when he spotted Salt and got the photo of him.

“others said he was seen quickly deleting something as they approached (which seems a bit more likely)”??? How the f*ck does anyone know from a distance that someone is deleting something from a phone? Was he using his deleting finger? What a load of BS.

Why does the location specified by Sky seem quite likely and consistent with all the other information we have. The information came from Boro so why is that trustworthy in your opinion, bearing in mind they’ve changed the details of the story more than once?

You’re suggesting that two days before the semi final of the playoffs they booked in some contractors to replace the sprinkler heads, or re-seed it or something, there would have been good reasons not to cancel that, so they just moved the training instead. Are you serious?

“They probably use a grass/artificial hybrid on that pitch and maintaining that needs specialist equipment that wouldn't be easy to re-book, as many clubs will be doing the same over the summer.” You’re probably right – there must be an absolutely huge demand for that type of equipment in Darlington. I mean there’s Darlington FC and ….. err…..Darlington FC women’s team

“It's possible that you could learn a lot by spying. That's why it's banned.” – But Ifonly it isn’t banned. You can spy on any training session up to 72 hours before the game

“Any well coached squad will have been practicing penalties before the first leg and the whole squad would be taking some. Seeing how they prefer to take them is gold dust, particularly for those who aren't normal penalty takers. They're likely to have a favourite one that they stick to under pressure.”

I love the way you just say things as if they’re fact.

Obviously I’ll bow to your massive knowledge of football coaching and wait to read your coaching manual when you release it

Not sure why you find it so difficult to accept that it happened and understand the reasons why, but that's fine. We'll find out soon enough if he was spying or not.

So Will Salt is spotted. I get that. What I don't get is how they immediately identify him as a spy rather than some random geezer who has spotted some footballers training and decides he wants to take a photo with his phone. They must get dozens of people stopping and watching and some probably even take photos. What immediately identified our bloke as a spy?

Good question. I don't know, but obviously the Boro staff member who spots him (turns out it's their photographer) thought he was suspicious. I doubt that he immediately knew he was a spy, but he thought he was suspicious, maybe because of the way he was partially hiding instead of hanging over the gate. Maybe he was there for longer than the average bloke who takes a quick photo and moves on, so they thought he was worth looking at.

The thing that gave him away was probably first furiously jabbing at his phone and then running away when he saw he was being approached.

Of course they've watched training outside the 72 hour window (they're openly invited to some of it) but within the 72 hour window is a different thing.

If spying was widespread in this country we would hear about it from ex spys and analysts selling their story in the press. Still nothing. No one has said a thing yet... apart from about us.

So watching training 73 hours before is allowed.
