Reality Check — Where do QPR fit in the football pyramid? 10:23 - Mar 10 with 1882 viewsarnieian

In football it seems that everything is always a matter of hyperbole — the best/worst thing ever, boom or bust. This season for us seems to sum this up. We were great, definitely top 6 maybe even top 2, now we are awful, never going to win another game, relegated to L1 never coming back and probably going out of business and disappearing for ever.

So where do QPR fit in the football pyramid? There are 92 teams. Where should we be? Top 6? Top 10? Maybe not despite being the highest placed London club at one point. So should we be 20-26th? Always in contention for promotion from the championship or 38-44th always in contention for relegation?

Where is our position in relation to all those other teams? Where do you see us?

To me the key factors in assessing this are as follows (not necessarily in order of importance)
Players — first team squad
Manager/Coaches
Owners — How much money they have/How good they are at spending it
Infastructure — Stadium/Training facilities including attendances (match day income)
Academy/Youth set up — players and coaches

So how many of the above are even top championship quality?
Are we destined to be 16th forever? Is that our place?

For what it’s worth at the start of the season I thought we were going to be somewhere between 10-14th, now I’d bite your hand off for that and think/hope we will end up 18th

Isn't this a generational thing?

I'll always consider us as being far and away superior to Bentford, Lootown, Brighton etc.
However try telling that to a 13 year old version of me now going to a game for the first time.

At this moment in time we are where the decisions of the Bungle Brothers, the ClownMafia and our apathetic fans have put us. We are a struggling Championship club who will have anything half decent taken for next to nothing and will bump around lower regions of the Division unless; a) we have a run of poor decisions even by our standards which will mean potential relegation, or, b) we have a run of great luck when the stars align and we flirt with the play offs.

Sad.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

I think Derby Hoop calls it right.

L Block, you implicate "our apathetic fans" in this mess, honest question, what do you think they failed to do? The board is constantly harangued on social media, about results, signing players, changes to the board and so on.

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

That actually puts us at 40th...

Which as it happens is the exact position we are now. 20th in the Champ.

Maybe we're all overreacting to our position, it's where we're meant to be after all.

A while back I had a look at our stats. In the 40 or so seasons that were played from about 1920 to the Rodney Marsh arrival around 1966/67 we spent about 90% of the time in Tier 3 and 10% of the time in Tier 2.

In the 54 seasons from 1968/69 (including the current 2022/23 season) we have spent approximately: 40% of the time in Tier 1, 54% of the time in Tier 2 and 6% of the time in Tier 3.

So prior to Rodney, the League Cup win, Alex Stock and Jim Gregory we were a natural Tier 3 side. Since then we appear to have been a natural Tier 2/Tier 1 side.

I do sometimes wonder whether the money raised from selling Rodney was the catalyst for the good times of the mid to late 1970s and later? Hopefully we can turn things round and stay a Tier 2/Tier 1 side.

By and large this is the only bit of social meejah I do.

In the last decade there has been, and continues to be, a groundswell of people who seem to think the owners and those in power need to be given continual chances.
Those of us pointing out to the contrary have been shouted down and been told to go and support Chelscum, find someone else to write the cheques and so on. It was clear to a few that Bungle did not have a clue when he rode in on his sedan chair with fifty pound notes falling out of his wallet. His appraoch was called out - I called him out to his face as he stood alongside his fellow chuckle brother Beard. They looked at me like I was mad and I could almost read their minds as being "why is this bald, three pints deep idiot questioning us spending large amounts of cash? Why is he saying we are playing fast and loose with his club?"... so on they went signing mercenary after mercenary with absolutely no thought to structure.

I'm not interested in the "sign a fcuking striker" brigade or "why aren't we beating Spurs every week" mob. That is the stuff of madness. I'm sure the Board let that slide off their oily backs quite easy.
What boils my piss is people have sleepwalked into us now having no choice but to accept this mob are here forever or it's the end of the club. How have we allowed the place to become in hock to the tune of £24mill a year due to the action and inaction of the board? Fans have accepted incompetence, bullshit PR, window dressing and spin often under the guise of "we're learning" or "trust us" or...look at the former favourite we're rolling out for you this week boys and girls.
The club is on the edge of oblivion and in decades gone we would've been ripping the place apart, showing our feelings and being seen and heard..... now it's just a shrug of the shoulders and a deep sigh with a "QPR innit?" - shamefully it's worn me down as well and I am in the Apathy Park Rangers FC gang as much as anyone.

So to answer your question - I think we have failed to be what we should be - the true guardians of this club. I think we've failed to look beyond the next shiny new player rolled out, the next BS announcement about training grounds, stadiums etc, etc and as a result we have a failing club.

Have a good weekend and may all our prayers for a win be answered.

I appreciate the detailed response, thanks for taking the trouble, but how could we have prevented that? How? By buying the club? Mass protests?

I just don't see how we have the ability to stop those things happening. It's the same with most clubs.

Enjoy your weekend too. I suspect that if your weekends are anything like mine, whether you enjoy it or not will largely hinge on our - cough - heroes in hoops, sigh

Sorry fella…. I can see I rambled and didn’t answer your question

You’ve asked a further question with no hyperbole and I always feel questions should be answered when civility is at play (others should take note)

Simply put maybe we couldn’t have prevented it - money talks, good intentions don’t walk.
But we’ve simply given them an easy ride and once in a generation opportunities to safeguard the future of a club that ABC and Paladini nearly broke have come along TWICE in a decade and they ballsed it up.
Clearly buying the place as a fan consortium was never going to happen (maybe in a few years) but I do think some accountability pressure and maybe even protests would’ve helped.
Even more clearly; getting people to protest when we’re winning the Championship and playing in the Prem was never going to happen……but since then why have people not kopt onto the ineptitude until we’re staring at League One?

So protests may not work but here’s two throwaways…..
David Bulstrode is on the record as saying the mergers were disbanded when he realised the passion against it by fans (plus one or three lively convos he had!!!)
Palace were going to be liquidated - absolutely no question. Then thousands gathered outside the Administrators office and protested actually locking their staff in as the 5pm deadline approached. Then an announcement comes out that a 28 day stay of execution granted and they found a way in that time to come back from the brink and look at them now.

I sometimes wonder if fans actually the level of power they could have as many of the authorities are shoite scared of us.
It’s such a shame Bury etc weren’t more in number and louder.

There but for the grace of £2mill a month go us

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Spooky. We were a top tier club in my early days, and for a lot of the time during my support. I sadly think we will never be that club again. Football has changed beyond belief for me personally.
