Frustration rather than fireworks as QPR fizzle against Burnley – Report on 20:37 - Nov 4 with 0 viewsMrSheen

Thanks Clive, I’d managed to forget Kone managing to miss the touchline from the kick off, truly a portent. I agree on the ref too, it was shame the penny didn’t drop that if you’re getting nothing for diving, maybe stop diving. Unfortunately his career will be held back by the fact that he’ll never be allowed to referee an Arsenal game.

Burnley, dear God, if you were looking to attempt a promotion challenge, you wouldn’t touch any of this lot - faint hearts or old legs. They all look like they want to be anywhere else, but who’d have them?

We weren’t great second half but we still had a few chances to win it .
They remind me of Leicester last season . I’d be very worried if I was a Burnley fan .

I'm in a minority of one I know, but I thought just occasionally the Clarets looked decent.
Walker did well but of course we should have had it wrapped up early on.
And yes the crowd was strangely quiet like a collective feeling it wasn't to be our night.

The concern with these dropped points are at some point we're gonna play good sides at home so these points will cost us later on.
Saturday feels like a big game, need to win that now

This game was like Mr Burns trying to take candy from a baby...

More than the recent losses this kind of game frustrates me so so much, because it lays bare our soft mentality. Not enough winners, not enough killers that see an easy 3 points has wandered away from the herd. Too much going through the motions and waiting for someone else to win the game for you...

If you can't take a win from a team as wide open as Burnley, you deserve the 15th place you get.

Yeh these results make or break a season. We should have won. Two points dropped , worse result than losing to Brum and Saints.

Saturdays bench was a bit of a joke, tuesdays was better I think the manager probably should have changed it earlier but I do take the point on upcoming fixtures. Burnley were there for the taking and we were just too timid.

The goal we conceeded was sloppy that's a bad habit we dont want to see creeping back in.

Possibly; I like to think we'd worked out the only thing that was going to fire Vardy up from his zimmer frame would be the normal torrent of abuse that is heaped upon him - who can forget Andy Cole looking like a geriatric, getting stick from the crowd, then having a hat trick about 15 minutes later? So we stayed quiet.

Or maybe we were doing a silent metaphor for Vale and Saito's non-existent performances.

Burnley were proper poor, Vine did as good as FA, Walker, a fantastic player who was brilliant on loan here, needs to 'hang his boots up but I suppose for what he is earning at Burnley - why not continue!! There were plenty of others in the Burnley side as well who were not very good too.

We should have won this match by a 'country mile'........probably as easy as we did against the Swans. Another two points dropped - we cannot keep doing that against very limited sides if we want play-offs.

Thanks Clive - Summed up a frustrating night very well.

On the plus side in my 50+ years of coming to Loftus Road I have seen us lose these types of games so many times so let’s take the point and move on to what is now an even bigger game Saturday.

We badly need to get that possession stat off our back and hope that will come Saturday and then become like London buses.

The worst part of the night was no Bovril in SAR. Bloody useless!!!

Cheers Clive.

Yes that Kone kick off was a sign of things to come. Talk about a statement of intent.

It's not a bad point IF we beat Lincoln on Saturday but you can bet we're going to struggle with that one too. And I'm going. Fk knows why.

I think the learning from all this has to be that we should never win our first game of the season, especially away from home. It gives us too much hope.

Agreed on the ref - nice to have a guy allow tackling and letting the game flow. Also mostly favoured us. But everyone seemed very upset wih him none the less

I think the point is that in many ways they really don't. Middlesbrough lost to Wrexham last night who have been poor (guess what they didnt have Lankshear playing...). West Ham very barely cobbled a draw against Cardiff.

This league is probably a lot closer together in terms of results and in/consistency than many other recent seasons.

As Clive has pointed out, the period that really matters is after this next international break when the games come thick and fast. Right now we are 7 points off top spot and lost narrowly to the leaders; that could be less come Saturday night.

Ignore who we've played, the start to the season has kept us in the mix and it really has to be about finding a way to be consistent and minimise injuries (lol) in this next period.

Stephan is clearly learning on the job and the team is improving. The football is way better than it has been and the players are responding and improving in almost all measurable ways.

A great report and a frustrating night.

Maybe I am being a little too generous but feels like progress that we can dominate against teams with the likes of Vardy and Walker in (age accepted). Obviously the possession stat is something we need to have a sharp focus on and finding a way to win and dominate with a seemingly very blunt forward line at the moment.

Lincoln looks like the perfect game to test this. Anything other than a win and I’ll be toning down my expectations for another season of mid table mediocrity.

So much to admire at the moment, which is most often not the case. Let’s hope we can polish, sharpen and mould those final pieces of the jigsaw together.

I agree the crunch time comes in the next few months, I just think we'll come to regret some of the points we've lost at home this season already, we're far from out of it and I still think we can finish top 8 but that was a waste opportunity the other night same as Bolton and Preston as well

Historically to finish 6-8th last ten years you need between 1.6 - 1.5 points per game. We're currently 1.5.

The big thing is to keep up momentum and not have too many winless streaks

If we can see the problem - we don't beat teams that cheerfully give us more possession - then the coaching staff can see it, too. Often, the opposition is happy to funnel back and watch us play around in front of them. But, this is not a new tactic and there must be an answer to the question of how to unsettle a packed defence. Julien Stephan will know what it is. So should our more experienced players.
As a former village and office team player who has never coached football and who is now mostly a TV spectator, I have only two ideas: a) more accurate shooting from distance and b) wingers getting to the line and pulling crosses back (which then requires similarly accurate shooting).
What is the answer, please?

Maybe.
I'd say it's not about mentality, I don't think there's much wrong with this lot's mentality. More that the ones with the rapier thrust weren't there.
Back 4 all fine. central midfield adequate defensively. but as you say, not enough killers further up - I think that's more availability than mentality.

Bare bones.

In terms of availability the only players that didn't start who fit the criteria - in my opinion - are Chair, and I see a bit of it in Kolli. Illy would drop kick his nan for 3 points and he takes ownership, nobody else in the top half of the pitch has that appetite. Vale was the worst example against Burnley, he started OK but once the game dropped he just let the tide drag him out.

Even Madsen, who is great and I love, is not the guy to shoulder a game and drag a team, he's just a key part if the group does well. We need individuals that can climb above the leaden footed performances like Tuesday and say fúck this - I'm going to make this happen. It's been a problem for years and that is the difference with games like Burnley.
