The influence of the Missus on Football Players Decisions 11:00 - Mar 12 with 1963 viewsnumptydumpty

Was just thinking randomly with myself like you do in lockdown moments of clarity.

Apologies for putting a dampener on football players' club loyalties !!!!

Just as an example : -

Charlie Austin says he loves this club and wants to stay here for the rest of his career.

When the end of season comes we offer him maximum £20k a week over 2 years which at the age of 31 for himself is a decent offer - however his good lady wife sees that he has been offered double that to play for relegated side West Brom and the wages offered over 2 years is £40k a week.

His Missus says "Charlie - theres a one million difference in contract offers - you know how you going earn that kind of money after football"

Charlie replies " Angel - yes but I love the lads , the craic, the team, the coach, its my football home. No sorry love. Am staying with the Rangers !!"

Just asking which argument wins the end game.

Charlie or his good lady wife ????

The way round this is easy, we would probably have to spend a million or two to buy a striker, offer that Charlie as a signing on fee and pay his wages in-line with our structure.

But if we giving him a £2 million signing on fee it would be breaking our payment structure anyhow - so even though its really important we keep him - would the club be prepared to do this..

They should be and this years purchases of players available at this £2 million price such as Dykes and Bonne who both decent well motivated men but lacking the top qualities someone like Charlie brings to the table

It seems a no brainer to me but we do want to avoid the conversations going over the Austin household dinner table to not be happening..

The complication to this question is that if you check his missus out on Twitter she seems to love the R's as much, if not more, than Charlie does.

I think everything's up for grabs.

Mr and Mrs Austin know how to 'play' QPR fans on social media. I'm not saying it's not genuine affection for the club, but by (possibly) over-doing the love of club thing the know they'll keep club and fans on their side and give Charlie a cast-iron option in the summer.

BUT... I also think that money talks to any player in the latter stages of their career. What's the very best he can hope for at QPR. Our top 2 players (allegedly) earn £13k a week. Perhaps Charlie might get £15k-ish.

He's on £70k at West Brom currently and under contract until Summer 2022.

They may very well want to keep him if they're relegated - a proven Championship striker.

But perhaps his bridges there are burnt and he may try and force a move and there'd be teams after him - perhaps parachute-payment-rich clubs like Sheffield United or Bournemouth.

I'd love to see him at QPR next season, but think it more likely any games he plays at Loftus Road will be as an opposition player.

Hope he proves me wrong.

There was a lot of chat when he went to Southampton that they were paying him £100k a week (I recall one of the goons at West Ham said that's why they couldn't sign him). He's never seemed to be a big flashy guy either and has a lot of horse based interests outside football (recall him tipping a 100/1 acca at Cheltenham 2015) I don't think they want for cash tbh

I remember Hogan Ephraim who I would imagine was never top of any pay scale saying in an interview that by 27 years old he was set for life and could play for fun after that.

Presuming Austin isn’t skint, the only decisions he has to make about his future is around his own personal and family comfort.

Presuming he still has links to Berkshire, this means Reading, Fulham, and Brentford aside I can’t really think of anywhere more convenient than us for his level of player.

A lot of presumptions there but if money was no longer a issue for me I’d want to go somewhere where I’d be guaranteed a good reception and has the least impact on my family life and where I have the freedom to sort my horses and media career out for my post playing days.

It might be a £1m contract difference on paper but after tax and N.I. it's only £469k a year.
Allow for a few bob from Talk Radio, easy reach of most Racecourses and most of all Job satisfaction I think he could be tempted.

Is that right? Excellent news.

What's our structure on buying flowers for the players' wives, can we go to Interflora or is it petrol station only?

yeah, she was tweeting her affection for QPR before we played at WBA last season.

My affection is more infection these days, alas!

What constitutes being 'set for life' means different things to different people. It seems simple, but it isn't.
