Anyone watching the Netflix 4 part series 'FIFA Uncovered'? I'm halfway through and, although not a particularly well made documentary, it does what it says on the tin.
Worth the watch if you're interested in understanding FIFA's corruption.
And if you are interested in a discussion of the documentary between the filmmaker, Miles Coleman, and a leading analyst of Middle Eastern affairs, especially in relation to football, James Dorsey, take a look at the following from YouTube:
Found it a bit underwealming to be honest. No new revelations really was there?
My thoughts were the same.
It's basically David Conn sitting there going "to tell you about all the atrocities in Qatar, we need to go back to the start of how Fifa came into being in the first place". I'm not sure we do, but ok, I get it, David Conn loves to go back to the start of how Fifa came into being in the first place. Four hours of going back to the start of how Fifa came into being in the first place and that's the end of the documentary.
Sepp Blatter basically allowed to sit there gurning into the camera and talking whimsically about how fcking smart he is. The head of the Qatar bid allowed to sit there saying "yeh loads of workers have died, but it's led to improvements in construction standards which is part of the reason we wanted the thing". I mean, fck me.
I found it interesting but perhaps I’m uninitiated compared to others in terms of the scale of corruption at FIFA.
I hadn’t realised the back story of Blatter and how long he (and others at FIFA) have had their snouts in the trough.
The loud collective gasp in the room when Qatar were awarded the World Cup resonates now more than ever as we count the total number of dead migrant workers.
The whole thing needs disbanding and starting over.
it sort of showed how small time the whole thing is I thought - a bung of cash here and there and you get the biggest tournament on earth. Football never really changes other than for the worse. Also the idea those old men are the ones deciding say VAR? But yes not a lot new in it.
