Finishing 12:48 - Aug 23 with 2841 views

Lots to be very positive about from the games we've played so far, but our finishing seems to have dropped off since last season.

Four penalties saved against Millwall.

Ten shots on target without scoring against Bolton.

Even the three goals against Pompey all seemed to crawl over the line.

Our shape and passing have been really good, but have we lost the killer instinct in front of goal?

I think Kolli would have put at least one if not two of those chances away yesterday. I have no clue why we want to loan our best finisher out.

Fair comment.

But I'm not trying to start a bring back Kolli thread.

I think the Kone and Burrell of last season would have bagged a couple yesterday.

I just think our finishing all round hasn't been as sharp as last season.

There's no question our finishing hasn't been good enough so far this season. We were better in preseason games though. Yesterday, playing against a team that basically parked the proverbial bus, was a mitigating factor but it's certainly something to be worked on.

Kone yes, just think of Wrexham away. Not sure that Burrell had any chances yesterday. His pressing and sprinting seem to be down on last season though.

Elanga’s opener today, very similar to the position Kone was in. Shows the gap between PL and Championship in terms of finishing. Kone will come good though, I am sure.

It did feel like Kone at the start of last season would have buried that one on one - I think it was just one of those days generally yesterday. If it keeps happening more of an issue.

Hopefully Kone gets a goal which I think will help him lots. I'm sure Stephan will work on it in training though in general with everyone.

We should have scored 5, Kone & Vale missed proper easy chances. And so did a few of the players miss chances as well. Kone & Burrell are a worry atm, both have played pretty poorly overall.

Despite how well they did last season, they could be the weak link. They need goals to improve their confidence, not only in front of goal but around the pitch.

KensalT's stats about the on-target shots missed (four missed penalties, then, in the next match, 10 missed or saved) are remarkable. The penalties against Millwall were pathetic, but Kone's one-on-one with the Bolton keeper was the big surprise. Most of us would have bet on him burying that one. It is, however, what happens to strikers - even very good ones. Stick with him. Encourage him. It will come right, then we shall see him score not just the 'easy' ones, but even better ones, that will remind us of what he can do.

Of course I might be making this up but I do wonder whether everyone is being a bit more cautious: players are being removed with knocks; slight niggles to Kamara and Madsen are rested; and, I think both Burrell and Poku are not putting the full after burners on. Just wondering if they’ve been told to protect their hamstrings a bit and build up to full speed and fitness.

It may have come out of the injury review they that had. I could be completely wrong but if they are doing that and it works across the season in terms of fewer longer term injuries then I’m in favour!
