Ezra Mam…he’s worth watching isn’t he??

Far from a perfect game, but what fun that was, neither side held back did they?

While I’m always interested in what my fellow Rs think will happen in and around us on the table, I did think this thread was going to take me in a very different direction…

Halftime and the Roosters look hard and professional but the Broncos look like they can score from nothing even when playing badly. Love having the footie back. What a footballing day this has been.

Not very often unfortunately, I think only three times this season with the rest at Suncorp. Still, if I can scrounge a ticket from somewhere I’ll join the crowd, the place will be overflowing for each game. I don’t think expectations are too high yet, even if higher after last year, it’s still feels a bit like our local team against the big boys even if the side is full of imports.

Thank goodness for that...should be a good game to open the year too, Indigenous All-Stars vs Maori. Don't think those boys will be easing into the season.

I'm really keen to see how the Dolphins go this year, I think the recruitment of Flegler, Farnworth and the under the radar Avarillo really adds to their strike power...and they weren't short of points last year already.

They're my local side so will try to get down to Redcliffe Stadium for a game in the RL equivalent of Loftus Rd.

That really is quite some turn-around isn't it? What if, and if only, really don't cover it.

You can normally only look back and see the sliding doors moments, but staying up this season or not looms as a massive one. At least now it feels like we have something and someone to pin our hopes on.

COME ON YOU R'S.

Looking Forward To Norwich

Getting back to Loftus Rd after a long time away is like having access to a time machine. There are so many changes to the places and people that I left behind, but there really hasn't been much change at all at HQ since I started going in the early 80's. Its lovely to have something in life that is as it was when I was a youngster.

I'm sorry you're back in the country for something so sad, but I hope you get to hi-ho that silver lining.

Will we stay up?

I just added a Yes vote, based almost entirely on Marti's impact. I know he's not on the pitch, but he seems to have enough of the players buying into his way of doing things to drag them over the line.
But then again, I started a recent thread complaining I couldn't get a price for us to finish in the top six, so my opinion shouldn't really carry much weight.

A late addition qpr_1968...I've posted a few times on here over the years but always felt guilty for not properly introducing myself and just crashing rudely in...I'm far from a cheese expert but have recently been introduced to Gouda and I'm a fan.

Short version of the back story, started watching the R's in 1982 after not being allowed to go to the Cup Final on my own (lonely young R's fan growing up in Fulham), but allowed to go to Shepherds Bush. As with others on here, fell head over heels for the team of Waddock, Stainrod, Big Bobby Hazell (shooot)....and have been unable to shake the illness since.

Emigrated to Brisbane in 1999, had a few trips back and have managed to get at least one game in on almost every trip. LOVE this forum, the writing, the (dark) humour, the range of conversation and debate, and the knowledge that such a diverse group of people can be drawn together by our love of a blue and white hooped shirt, and occasionally the custodians who wear them.

Now that I've shared my cheese preference, I feel strangely relieved.

Even through having to write about that, you made me laugh out loud - you are a hilarious angry man Clive. And while I like laughing, I wish you didn't have so much to be angry about.

Big thank you to Clive for keeping this forum going
at 02:52 1 Jan 2024

There aren't too many things I miss about the UK too be honest, but heading to see the R's is one of them. This site, and your writing + Patreon efforts, help me feel like I'm still in touch Clive.

I actually use some of your articles to try to explain to my children who I am, where I'm from and why I am the way I am - you're far more articulate than I ever manage to be, so your words are borrowed. While I think they may understand now, I don't think they can quite believe it.

Anyway...thanks and may the ink in your pen never run dry.

This is the real test of the 'lessons learned' isn't it? What sort of club are we?

We were all onboard for the buy low, develop and sell high model at one point, then got over excited about a possible push for promotion and threw away all that good work. We're now at the other end of the table and perhaps some of us want to hang on to good players to avoid a potential drop.

Thing is, a good principle is a good principle, regardless of the circumstances of the moment.

Tank Park Salute by Billy Bragg, a tribute to his dad - I’m in floods every time.

‘Photographs of a summers day , a little boys lifetime away
What has become of everything we’ve done
Like a pale moon in a sunny sky, Death gazes down as I walk by
To remind my that I’m but my fathers son’

Stop it…there I go again…😢

Betting suspended on a Top Six finish?
at 23:41 6 Dec 2023

Do I really think we'll finish top six...? Well, probably not, but I was checking the odds as I was enjoying the experience of optimism in relation to our prospects for the first time in a long time.

I was actually more surprised that SportsBet don't have a price for us to do it, while they do every other side in the Championship - I just checked again and they still don't.
I wonder why?

Also, there was a bit of the 'can you imagine if they did, and I didn't back them' going on. Not logic but emotion at work, which is why I only have a couple of $'s on at a time.

Betting suspended on a Top Six finish?
at 01:07 6 Dec 2023

I just logged onto my SportsBet account to see what price we are for a top six finish (I know, I know...).

Every other team in the league has a price against them apart from Rangers...betting suspended. Have we struck that much fear into the competition/bookies that they won't even offer a price?

I'm only looking to put a couple of $'s on as you just never know, so I think they should be able to cover that.

Marti channeling El Tel?
at 11:20 5 Dec 2023

Listening to the Open All R's podcast I was interested as Gary Micklewhite described how Terry Venables corrected the problem of sending crosses over the byline for he & Steve Burke. "Where are you aiming?" "The six yard box" "well aim for the penalty spot then" - problem solved. He also told them as he started the conversation that they were the best crossers of a ball at the club. Simple.

It isnt hard to imagine Marti calling in Ilias Chair and telling him he is one of the most talented ball players at the club. "Now Ilias, I want you to put the ball in the danger areas quickly, one touch then send it" "But what if there's no one there boss?" "Getting someone there is my job Ilias, leave that bit to me".

I know its only one half of football but there did seem to be a distinct change. I'm probably getting carried away by this comparison I know, but it's exciting to see long term issues potentially be addressed at last.

Shane McGowan dead
at 22:16 30 Nov 2023

FFS what week, two cornerstones of my teen years gone.

I've always thought of Rangers as having a strong Irish influence amongst our supporters, Shepherds Bush was almost a 33rd county for a few decades. Until I discovered The Pogues I struggled to understand where I was from, born in London of Irish immigrant parents, but then I learned you can be from both worlds and proud. Cockney-Celts wandering the Dark Streets of London.

And with this the romance...who doesn't want to hear someone describe them as 'the measure of my dreams'...?

What a legacy, Shane McGowan was a poet for my generation.
