I'd give it to him now because realistically a lot of damage has been done and we'll probably be relegated anyway. Shirt term fixes break things more than taking the time to fix the damage properly |

Excellent write up of a horrible time. I particularly like the write up on Hughes' transfers. Interestingly, during his 6 league wins his signings only scored 3 of the 12 goals we scored to win those games. My worry now is the same mistakes may be repeated with a new manager. Too many signings who do not want to play for for the club. Tonight though I will just be pleased we do not have more dulcet Hughes tones and overused excuses. Thanks for all your hard work Clive! |

Fascinating and I regularly think about this myself. I actually think I loved travelling up and down the country watching Holloway's Rangers despite watching players like Bonnot, Ben Askar and Doudou. I still remember watching the R's away at Chesterfield. Freezing cold day, you wee to the wall but over 1000 Rangers fans packed into the away terrace cheering goals from (i think) thomson, rose and shittu. Danny taking his shirt off and swinging it around his head in the cold! Rangers may have been regulary poor but the 13000 at HQ every week loved them just as much as they do now.
For this to happen again and for us to have fans who are aware of our history we need to be relegated probably twice. The choice for us is premier league with some proper idiots watching us who are unaware of any Rangers history or the alternative of a relegated and I'm sure in financial ruin again Rangers.
The final thing I struggle with is I really believe I loved: Day, Shittu, Rose, Carlisle, Padula, Ainsworth, Rowlands, Bircham, Cook, Gallen, Furlong, Thomson and the rest more than I currently love Cesar, Bosingwa, Ferdinand, Nelson, Traore, Taarabt, Granero, Faurlin, Diakite, Hoilett, Cisse, Zamora and the rest.
My conclusion is I love Rangers less now than I did 10-15 years ago travelling the length of the country with my dad. |

I actually think when you look at our players they are suited best to the 4-2-3-1. I've been impressed with the way a few teams have used it recently. Spurs play with Defoe as the main striker (certainly not big) and Man City can use Agyero and Tevez there as well as Dzeko and Balotelli.
I think the one can actually be Cisse but I would pick Zamora. But in the midfield 5 positions we have plenty of options. The sitting 2 can be anyone from Diakite, Faurlin, Derry and M'Bia. The attacking 3 can come from: Taarabt, Granero, Hoilett, Park, Mackie and Wright-Phillips. I think it suits the midfield players (our best players) and shows off their natural strengths.
Personally I felt confident even before the Swansea game that our team should be: Green; Fabio, Ferdinand, Nelson, Traore; Derry, Diakite; Mackie, Taarabt, Hoilett; Zamora. Now that Faurlin is back fit and we've signed Cesar, Bosingwa and Granero I am even more sure that this formation fits the players.
My 11 would be: Cesar; Bosigngwa, Ferdinand, Nelson, Traore; Diakite, Faurlin; Taarabt, Granero, Hoilett; Zamora. With back ups of Green; Dyer, Onuoha, Hill, Fabio; Derry, M'Bia; SWP, Park, Mackie; Cisse.
Next up step captain Nelson. A leader by example and by his voice...
Finally does anyone else think they could all do with a few nights out together and actually look as if they're having a good time. They look like strangers, they need good old English team bonding. i.e. a lot of beer and some laughs... |

Excellently written article again. I'm not getting over this one anytime soon.
I'm in the stick with Hughes team at the moment because the main issue is the constant selection issues with injuries.Â
However he is not helping himself by constantly changing the formation. 4-4-1-1 v Swansea which didn't work but did against Spurs. 4-4-2 didn't work V West Ham, Norwich or most of the Man City game and the defence won the draw V Chelsea.
Most of our  wins under Hughes were all with 4-5-1 with a combination of Derry, Buszaky, Diakite or Barton as the middle 3. Buszaky and Barton have been replaced by M'Bia, Granero and Faurlin this season which is much stronger. I think this is our best option.Â
Stick with the formation and I think we're half way there! It plays to our strengths because it becomes 4-3-3 in attack! Midfields our strongest position and he needs to get it right.
Below is my 1st XI and replacements and then what i'd do at the weekend despite injuries:
1st XI:
Cesar;Bosingwa, Ferdinand, Nelson, Fabio;Â Hoilett, Granero, Diakite, Faurlin, Taarabt;Â Zamora. Â
Back Ups:

Injured: Dyer, Bosingwa, Ferdinand, Fabio, Johnson.

Hughes has now signed this summer Bosingwa, Nelson, Dawson and Fabio. Do we think this might end up his first choice back 4? Mind you in January he also signed Onuoha. That's 5 defensive signings. Maybe leaving Onuoha, Ferdinand, Hill and Traore as the back ups. Last season we did well (at home) because he stuck with his back 4. I hope he does this. |

That Gregory team made me very proud. I remember a noisy LR when we beat Preston 1-0 with a great goal from Blackstock. They always tried their best! Unfortunatly he's in a long list of ex rangers managers who can't get a proper job now.
Thank-you for that clive, it was really interesting. And thanks for the offer to sit with you on Saturday in the Hogs Head but we had pretty good seats to watch the Arsenal game and ended up in their beer garden for another couple after the match had finished. |

I've used the Walkabout on Queen Street which is OK and was away friendly last time out. I'm going to be going there. Got very good advance tickets - Euston to Wolverhampton for £17.50 return. I'm leaving Euston at 9.30 ish I think though. |
