LOL I think it is still plagiarism if you don't get caught, but love the nuance, made me chuckle :)

My style could never imitate Clive's great writing of course, but I did nick his basic idea, which is plagiarism ... and by owning up I guess I've been caught, ...

Plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery ... and as a big fan of Clive's reporting, this opportunity to develop his theme from the Burnley game was just too good to miss!
This is the report on the Swedish winner's tactics in this week's West London Cycling Online Cycle Race .... and it all starts with Gareth Ainsworth .... never thought I'd work him into one of my cycling reports!

Unbeaten since Dozell was dropped
at 18:14 22 Apr 2023

My big gripe has been that Dozell is so ineffective that we are effectively playing with 10 men ... results so much better without him.

I thought being a spectator of the pitch was a criminal offence?
If so, how does Andre Dozell get away with it?

A five-goal thriller from 1975 - History
at 19:19 2 Dec 2021

.... seeing a teenage me on the footage celebrating that David Webb goal brings back some memories. In those days Match of the Day was far more important than these Premiershite, Celebrity Soccer, Big Brand days of Gary Waneker and Alan Shiterer.

I think for about a week after that game people were coming up to me and saying they saw me on Match of the Day. Of course, being on TV means very little these days, but back then, with only three channels and less disposable income, it was far more influential and watched.

Any Cyclists?
at 17:34 22 Aug 2020

If you fancy virtual racing, try RGT. We at Westerley CC (West London club) run virtual races on Wednesday evenings on RGT and attract riders from all over the world.
It's two or three Wednesdays a month. Check our website for details.

Anyone in West London looking for a cycling club:
We do Sunday morning rides from the Polish War Memorial and organise a load of online races (you need a smart trainer or power meter). We usually run a lot of Time Trials and the Hilingdon 10s but they've been cancelled this year due to COVID.
Anyone interested in Audaxing, we are doing a 200km from Ruislip on 1st August.

Kane - a real weak link
at 09:13 28 Nov 2019

Strange how we see things differently.....I was at home watching this on TV (I am a season ticket holder but was ill). On the way home from games I speak to people who sit elsewhere in the ground and we (sometimes) sound as though we have been at different games!
I think Kane gets away with it because he's relatively anonymous a lot of the time, particularly as he has an aversion to taking on opposition players, but he gets remembered for the odd good cross.
Manning was actually quite productive but spoiled it with bad crosses and shots. In fact at half time the Sky commentary team described the whole first half as 'The Ryan Manning show', intimating that he was the best player on the pitch. I think he wasn't as good in the second half, but what it says to me is that if you try and fail, people notice the failure, but do nothing and there are no negatives.
But look at Forest goals 1,2 and 3, Kane is a weak link.

Kane - a real weak link
at 08:11 28 Nov 2019

I am quite surprised how little criticism Kane gets...I think he's one of our main problems. Most of the time, when going forward, as soon as an opposition player is in front of him he passes backwards....this is one reason I think that our passing from the back doesn't work (along with the fact that all of our opponents have worked out that if you flood the space between our defence and midfield then we don't have any options and don't know what to do with the ball).
In fairness, once or twice in a game Kane gets a head of speed and whacks in a good cross, but these moments are far outweighed by the negatives.
Kane was at fault in three of the Forest goals, he didn't challenge for the first; slightly impeded? Yes, but defenders need to be tougher than that. He gave the winger too much space for the cross in goal two, and was standing watching as Forest players queued up for number four (not the only guilty party to be fair).
The morale is sapping out of the team and we have lost any momentum going forward because we have been found out when passing from the back. Having a wing back that is shy of taking on opposition players and can't position and challenge particularly well when defending is a liability in my view.

Antti's 6 Knee Jerks - QPR 2 Wigan 1
at 14:01 22 Feb 2017

Yeni a good attacking option? Seriously?

It's like playing with 10 men when Ngbakoto is on, he appears to have very little positional sense whatsoever. He took a good free kick on Saturday and had a half decent shot that just missed last night but, apart from that, I don't want to see him in our team at all I'm afraid.

I would actually prefer the Friday as I can't go on the Saturday!

Got all excited when I was told it had been changed, will be a bit of a blow to find out that it hasn't!

Non QPR: Berlin
at 18:44 7 Feb 2017

I'm going to Berlin this weekend for the film festival so have to miss our home game. I wondered if I might get a chance to see a game out there, but won't have time.

If you are going to Hertha's game and haven't been to the ground before, get there early and walk around. There are many things left over from the Berlin Olympics from the 1930s and it is pretty impressive. You can also go up to the part where the Olympic flame was etc as there are still swastikas in the wall.

Most BBC journalists and reporters seem pretty stupid to me. They certainly ask some dumb questions in interviews. It really is an organisation in decline.

The article actually refers to graduates, and the days of graduates representing the more intelligent (if that was ever true, which I doubt) have long since disappeared. Like a poster above implies I probably earn more than most graduates, but there are footballers without degrees earning more than me and a clutch of graduates combined. University degrees are not special anymore and are no mark of a person's intellectual standing. In my career I meet well educated thick people regularly, then have to pay a TV licence to suffer them on the BBC too.....admittedly, I can choose other channels but I still resent paying the licence fee.

Yes, much the same experience for me. Saw 7 others riding back to London (3 from Twickenham CC, 2 from Rapha CC/Woodford, an Islington CC and a bloke from Muswell Hill). Like you, I was dodging incoming peletons for the first 65k back. Did you see that 4 wheeled bike with 4 riders on it coming the other way? It was an awesome contraption.

The headwind home is probably always going to be an issue as winds are predominantly westerly. The headwind wasn't too bad but I bonked through not eating enough so wasn't fighting it with much speed anyway!

Not sure where you rode back to, but I peeled off the DD route just after Epping and headed towards Waltham Abbey and shadowed the M25 to Watford, then dropped south to Ruislip which wasn't a great route TBH. Will have to rethink that for next time!
Great event IMO.

Errr, well, it was neutralised for Adam Yates in a similar manner and there is an unwritten rule that you don't attack the Yellow Jersey when it has a mechanical (which Mollema effectively did) and, finally, if it weren't a mountain top finish the riders crashing would get the same time within the last 3km.

With regard to the last point, the only reason for the exclusion of mountain top finishes is the fear that riders would deliberately pull up just under 3km short and save their legs. This was clearly something different and if you add in the fact that spectators cannot be seen to be affecting the outcome it makes sense.

Even though Mollema might complain that everyone got a time bonus but him, surely even he can see that the other aspects outweigh that?

Meanwhile, I did the Dunwich Dynamo on Saturday/Sunday and rode back too. Excellent event.....did you do it Dolcelatte?

Etape was, errr, well yes it was fine although I did puncture on a fast descent and some tw*t knocked me off on a climb, but that's not quite as headline grabbing as the Ventoux events I'm afraid. And 'road rash' is nothing when compared to the suffering caused by that thick loser driving a truck in Nice.
Glad the tour went on today. I think the only person that might have a gripe over the commissaires decision yesterday could be Mollema but, even so, Froome would be back in yellow today even if they hadn't. We'll see what happens, but Quintana has been disappointing so far and doesn't look like a worthy winner. Seems he's been let off grabbing a tow yesterday!
