QPR - State of Play
at 10:29 20 Nov 2025

This is a very interesting thread to read and wend through.

On paper, we arguably have one of our best squads in years. So why aren't we doing better thus far this season?

My two cents:

Nardi is done. Shame. given he was decent last season, but he's now afraid to police and own the box -- reminds me a bit of Lumley.

Hamer is better, but represents a bandaid not a fix. Whether we get a new number 1 in January or this summer should be a foregone conclusion.

IF JCS doesn't get back into the flow by the turn of the year, we've got to turn the page and go after an Edwards-type to fill the void. Hopefully one with a bit of speed.

Dunne far too slow and lacking nimbleness at RB for a fast-paced attack. Keep him at CB.

Field is one of our best shot blockers but will not change his sideways and backwards passing style of play. Tempting to retrain him at CB.

Varane must be coached up to get on the front foot more often. Real talent there. But it doesn't translate at game time.

Frey needs to be sold. He's a complete misfit for the squad as currently composed.

Kolli? This is maddening. Someone has it in for him, and yet he's far and away a faster and more dangerous threat than Frey yet can't make the bench (even over Bennie).

Dembele either starts scoring regularly or he's benched/sold off because he refuses to play ANY defense.

JS? Stop futzing around with the lineups (done in part to satiate all the players on the squad), and mandate one basic style of play backed by a fairly set team of players who can support a faster paced, up the field, style of play. We've become boring of late because the coach has allowed it.

And can we PLEASE have some sense of tactics on corner and free kicks.

Best all.

What should QPR do with Sam Field moving forward?

Field HAS been one of the most reliable players over the past few seasons, which is why it's sad to see he's riding the bench right now. That said, he's simply not a player who brings enough to the offense (how many times has he missed shots within the box?).

That said, it makes a lot of sense to keep him match fit (and our thin back line fresh) to play him in spells at CB as well as in relief to see out games in the midfield. He's truly one of our best shot blockers, he uses his height well, and he remains one of our squad's most durable.

I like what I see, and like others am curious if he'd be more impactful as an attacking central midfielder than on the wing (especially given we will have Poku, Dembele and Smyth as options).

Fair comment.

We'll know a lot more tonight when we see JS' starting XI.

Short of injuries, where do you see Field getting playing time? I think he's solid closer to the back line, less so moving forward.

Julian Stephan has to be given credit for immediately changing tactics (and personnel) following the thrashing at Coventry. Now he has to show both wisdom and consistency by starting the best XI on a club that's built for pace. His positive comments about "Michy" after Milwall is concerning as all who saw that game universally panned his performance.

Frey and Field are surplus (unless we try using Sam, a great shot blocker, as a back-up CB). Cook should only be used as a spot starter to spell Morrison. Mbengue should play EVERY game. We should consider slotting Dunne back at CB at times while recruiting another RB in January. Saito/Burrell/Kone/Vale up front as often as possible, spelled by Poku and Smyth. Finally, would platoon Varane with Hayden; the former is still a bit shaky to be an every game starter.

Like so many on this site I believe we have our best shot at the playoffs in years. Let's go for it.

Totally agree with you. With Chair and Poku nearly back to full fitness and availability we are stocked with talent at midfield and striker. Use our best XI. Frey okay to play out games but too slow afoot to keep up with this up-tempo offense.
