He said in an interview a few weeks ago that he, Steve Cook and Jimmy Dunne have a 'coffee club' where they regularly meet up after training. Interesting. I guess it could be a coincidence the offensive play of our full backs, especially at corners, has increased since Andersen arrived but I'm guessing it isn't. That said, I agree he didn't play well yesterday. And, based on his body language, he felt the same way. Still he gives us what Dozzell and possibly Amos, we're supposed to provide but never could. That important passing link from mid-field forward. [Post edited 21 Apr 21:21]

I mentioned what, to me, is the bizarre criticism of Andersen on another thread yesterday. To briefly recap. Our strikers don't score many goals. Our best two forwards, Chair and Willock, are reactive players, essentially runners with a ball at their feet. They don't create space for others because, all to frequently, no one can read where they're going. Andersen, OTOH, is a forward focussed creative hold up player who's always looking for a space to pass to. Consequently we're more of a threat from corners and dead ball situations because of him. Sure he's probably past his prime, and can't do ninety minutes anymore but, to reiterate, no one else in the current squad does what he can. Booting him out the door unless we're certain we've found someone who can replace him is nutsy cuckoo. [Post edited 21 Apr 17:33]

Be nice, before we got rid of him, to find someone who can cross a ball as well he can. It's not long ago we were bewailing the fact we had no one who could do that. He can. He also makes a lot space in the offensive zone with his vision and control. Sure he's getting on in years, and this division is probably step up for him too. Nevertheless he, or somebody with similar tools, will be sorely needed next season. Be crazy/mad to cut him lose after the last couple of games. |
